SAMUEL CASTLE was running a mill on the road to New Fairfield by 1745 but died in 1761. We are not positive of his ancestry but a member of the Castle family of Woodbury, CT came to the Amenia area and there may be a connection that we have not found. There are no land records in Beekman or Pawling for the Castle family. [Primary source is History of Ancient Woodbury, Ct., 528]. A brief sketch of the Castle family of Amenia follows. DANIEL3 CASTLE, (Isaac2, Henry1) was born 8 Oct. 1717 at Woodbury, CT and died 7 June 1777 in Amenia. He was bd. in the Burial Ground at Steel Works, on the road between S. Amenia and Wassaic. [NEBG 126]. He m. Elizabeth _____ who died in Amenia 28 April 1804 in her 84th year and was bd. in the same place. In Jan. 1761 Daniel Castle was on a 108 acre farm in lots 47 & 48 in the Oblong, (Nine Partners). He was taxed in Crum Elbow as "Castle Esq." from June 1759 through Feb. 1762 and then in Amenia to 1773 when the listing became Daniel, which in turn became "estate" in 1778. He was a witness on a deed of 25 March 1760 between Joseph Clapp of the Oblong and Daniel Reed of Norwalk. [D 3:351]. On 13 Jan. 1773 Robert G. Livingston of NYC sold 979 acres of lot 30 in Amenia to Daniel Castle Esq., Gideon Castle, James Reed, Extra Reed and Gershom Reed, all of Amenia. The consideration was £725. Two of these Reeds were sons-in-law to Daniel Castle. [D 6:395]. Daniel and Samuel Castle were witnesses together on 5 June 1759 for a deed involving lots in the Oblong. [D 4:54]. His will was made 14 May 1777 and proved 3 Oct. 1788. [DCW A:104, AA:70]. Daniel Castle was from Roxbury, per Amenia Ch. record. - 329 - Settlers of the Beekman Patent Dutchess County, New York Volume I Historical Records Settlers of the Beekman Patent Dutchess County, New York An Historical and Genealogical Study of all the 18th Century Settlers in the Patent by Frank J.
