Mary Jane Gibson Castle is a sister to my g-g-grandfather. With some wonderful help from a researcher in Illinois, I have put together the following information on Orin (Orrin) and Mary Jane Gibson Castle. The 1850-1870 US Census records for Orrin and Mary Jane Gibson Castle were located. Mary Jane was listed at varied ages relative to the census years, but in 1850 and 1860 was listed as 21 and 31 years old respectively, which would have made her 11 years old in 1840 and her birth date about 1829. This couple was found in: . Washington Township, Tazewell County in 1850 o living with Orrin's father "Thos Castle" . Morton Township, Tazewell County in 1860 . Chenoa Township, McLean County in 1870 The children of this marriage, compiled across all of the census records are: 1. Thomas Elisha Castle b. Nov 1850 (listed as "Elisha" until 1900) 2. Edna M. Castle b. 1852 (listed as "Eden" and male in 1870) 3. Annanetta (Annette) Castle b. 1855 4. Gilman Castle b. 1859 (no longer in family group by 1870) 5. Milton (Marvin N.) Castle b. 1862 6. George Vivian Castle b. 1867 (listed as "Vivian" in 1870) 7. Ella M. Castle b. 1868 In 1880, Orrin D. Castle is back in Washington Township but his wife, Mary, was listed with the middle initial "S" and age 43. This record is not a mistake. Instead, the record accurately reflects a second marriage to Mary S. Tamplin, which occurred on the first of January 1873. Due to this marriage date, Mary Jane Gibson Castle must have died after the 1870 census, perhaps as late as 1872. In 1900, Orin is listed as widowed (later records drop the second "r"). In that census, Orin D. and Thomas E. are found in Hitchcock County Nebraska. Find a Grave has listings for Orin D. Castle (1824-1901) and his sister Edna M. Castle (1820-1898) also in Hitchcock County. The 1920 US Census has Thomas E. Castle working as a barber in Casper, Wyoming. Thomas Elisha Castle has a death record from Salt Lake City, Utah, recorded in August 1920. The death record refers to Mrs. E. M. Stinson (other records confirm this is the sister also named Edna) who cared for him his last 4 months of life. It also lists Orin D. Castle and Mary Jane Gibson as his parents. I did find a burial record for the younger Edna also in Salt Lake City Cemetery. Someone on Ancestry says that this Edna's middle name is Mariah. Have yet to see a record on that, but if accurate, would likely be in honor of her maternal grandmother, Mariah Scogins Gibson. As mentioned, above, a picture of the gravestone for Orin and his sister Edna are found on findagrave.com. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
