I know that there are a number of petitions being organised on this topic, but the one on the 10 Downing Street web site may well be the one that has the most hope of success. At present, our UK Census returns are released as public information after 100 years have elapsed since the information was gathered. So, the 1901 census was released in January 2002 (with a few "slips 'twixt cup and lip"!). The proposal is to reduce this private period to 70 years which would lead to the early release of the 1911 and 1921 Census returns. The 1931 Census was completely destroyed by fire many years ago and there was no 1941 Census taken due to WW2; so if this proposal is accepted, the next Census to be released would be that taken in 1951 which would appear in 2022 - and would contain the name of yours truly, which is a sobering thought! Now there has been a recent legal challenge on the subject of the 1911 Census which has led directly to a press announcement from The National Archives that they will begin preparation for the early release of that part of the 1911 Census which does not contain sensitive information. The intention is to exclude some data e.g. the data relating to various disabilities, but to enable searches of names, addresses etc. This partial release is planned for 2009 with the entire Census being made available in 2012 as originally planned. However, currently there is no intention to release the 1921 Census before 2022. That's where this 10 Downing Street petition comes in. It is asking for the closure period for all UK Census returns to be reduced to 70 years, thus making possible the early release of the 1921 Census. So far, under 8,000 people have signed the petition and we need many more signatures than that to make an impact on our Decision Makers. Bill: No they aren't on line at all, the church in her area probably archived the records, so I suggest you contact the church where Olive most likely attended and ask two things. First, did the church publish a booklet with birth's, deaths, etc. and second, ask where they archived old records. Some churches published booklets with all that info in it, so ask if there is a copy available and where you would find it. Hopefully they will give you the address where they archived old records. I suggest you do a google search for the churches in the area and write to them first and ask which depository they used to archive their records. The church in Litchfield sent their's to Hartford. For the life of me I can't remember the exact name, but I'd try the Congregational church. Not sure if that will help. Unfortunately they had an index with Simeon Castle's name and it gave baptism records for Roswell, Laura and Orange, but that was about it. I'm sorry I no longer have the address for the Hartford church, but I know you will find it on line by doing a google search. Bill: I have an Olive Castle but she was born much earlier. Sorry I can't help. These Castle folks sure are elusive. Have you tried checking the church records in Hartford CT. From what I have been told most of the church's archived their records in Hartford. Hello Murphy, It's nice to see your name again! I reviewed the descendant chart for Benjamin Castles b. abt 1776 in VA. In reading the list, I noticed that John Wiley Castles b. 1802 wife Margaret Clearman and her son James Wiley Castles b. 4/25/1840 died in Winnsboro, Wood County, Texas. Do you have any additional information on this family line? That is a major "coincidence" as my John Levi Castle b. 1837 in Alabama moved to Winnsboro, Wood County about 1845-50 with his first wife, Elizabeth Munday, and lived about 6-8 miles south of Winnsboro near his sister Martha and brother Thomas. Elizabeth's father Tipton Munday and family also lived close by. All these families appear on the 1860 Wood County censuses. I would be very interested in any information you have about Benjamin Castles (b. 1776) parents and siblings. This certainly holds promise for locating possible parents of John Levi Castle b. circa 1800-1805 born in South Carolina according to his son's census information. Both my father and uncle were born in Winnsboro, Texas. I have sent a DNA test to my uncle which he promised to complete and send in two weeks ago. Have any of your relatives had DNA testing? His children that I know of were born in 1832, 1834 and 1838 in Alabama. He married in 1824 (as Levie Castle on the Alabama Marriage Records) so I assumed that his birthdate was approximately 20 years earlier. I have not considered the Georgia Cassels before-thank you for that lead. I do have the information about the 40.15 acres for Charity Castle in the Montgomery land office of the Land Patent Site. This is definitely my Charity Castle and this land was given to her sons John and Thomas who subsequently moved to Wood County, Texas. She then married Montgomery Gause in 1842 after John Levi's death but I can find no further information on them. I will investigate Benjamin F. Cassels/Castles/Castle and report back my findings. Charity Swain), in AL seems a bit young to be the Levi Cassel son of John Cassels/Castles, 1815 will, Jasper Co, GA. If you look at the Land Patent site for AL, you will find a Charity Castle had a survey for 40.15 acres of land with an issue date of 6-1-1845. The land office is Montgomery. The only other spelling of Cassels/Castles/Castle etc with the same land office is a Benjamin F. Cassels/Castles/Castle. Could he have been a relative of your John Levi who married Charity Swain?
