I would like to clarify locations and who I am talking about because I'm not sure we're on the correct line. My Lucinda Castle was married to James Radcliff Oliver and lived in Connecticut, Mass & RI. They later divorced and James remarried. I hope this will be a clarification. My Lucinda is buried in CT. My father always told me that his grandmother Mattie Shinn Hughes was married to Samuel Castle Hughes in Georgia. He left her supposedly and went to Texas and then Oklahoma. She then married E.B. Cannon. That was the story my father knew. Unfortunately there is no 1890 census. On the 1900 census it shows that she married E.B. Cannon in 1894 and Grady Hughes was born in 1894. Technically his name was cannon, but he was living with his grandmother Shinn in 1913 when both his mother (mattie) and his stepfather? died suddenly. The other four children in the family were turned over in guardianship to some people named Higgins. I don't know what happened. When Grady turned up in Tallapoosa Georgia in 1914 and married my greatgrandmother his name was no longer Cannon, but Hughes. He was married or had an affair with Mattie it had to be between 1890 and 1894. Could I see his picture? I would be happy to send you pictures of Henry Grady (also his mother was Ann Penelope Green and she died sometime before 1900. He had a brother named Henry Grady Hughes in the 1880 census who was 1 at the time. but was never listed with the family again.) Maybe with each others help we might be able to solve the mystery of the Hughes'. Thanks for answering my letter. My grandfather was Horace Hughes which was Samuel & Lena's oldest son. I've never met any of my grandfather's siblings or his parents. I have a lot of questions concerning the Hughes. One is that they had a daughter named Anna Gertrude Hughes who was on the census when she was 13yrs old but not when she was 3yrs old. Also Samuel's wife Lena gertrude Johnston is on all the census with her parents being Joseph l Johnston born in Georgia and Mary C White but her death certificate and her obit says her father was Thomas Johnston born in Mississippi. Lena was the middle child so she was either adopted or her mother had an affair. I found Joseph, Thomas and Mary White all living in Pontotac, Mississippi when they were in their early teens. If you ever come across any information concerning any of this it would b! e appreciated. Thanks Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. An uncle of the Castle (Cassel) line has completed a DNA test and I am wondering if you are aware of any DNA testing that has been done on the Henry Castle line. I would very much like to compare the results to give my research some impetus. I have found possibilities from both lines so focusing my efforts would be very helpful. On the back is inscribed in red paint "Hannah Castal [sic]. Her chist [sic]. 1787 Aug. 29" I found several Castle households in the 1790 Vermont census, but no "Castal" households, and suspect it's just creative spelling. I'm guessing Castle was her maiden name, and that she was a young woman when this chest was made for her in 1787. Has anyone come across a Hannah Castle of the appropriate age in Vermont?
