As you will see I posted the message some time ago when I was researching my father's tree. Winifred Morris /Castle's grandfather and mine were brothers - mine was David Morris and hers was George Lewis Morris. I was interested as I have a copy letter from Winfred to a cousin of ours (Margaret Pugh) where she talks about her lovely sons etc. The George Lewis part of the family has always been a bit of a mystery but I have now had a contact from Frank who mentioned that he was in touch with some of the Castle family. I take it that you are a grandson of the Castle family? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. But how do you discount the fact that Jacob and Sowegee met in what is now western Pennsylvania. Definitely no Cherokee lived in that area with the Shawnee. These two tribes were not very friendly with each other. As for your feelings of not being very "Shawnee", that is okay, but I feel quite differently about that. DEATH OF A FORMER CITIZEN T. E. Castle Sends NEWS of the Death of His Father. We are in receipt of a letter from T. E. Castle of Stratton, Nebraska, in which he encloses the following from the Trenton Register. "Died, at his home in Stratton, Neb., Thursday, March 20, 1902, Orin D. Castle of Brights disease, aged 77 years, 9 months and 20 days. Mr. Castle was born in Licking county, Ohio, June 6, 1824. When at the age of 12 years his father moved the family across the county by ox team, and settled near Washington, Tazewell county, Illinois. Here Orin grew up to manhood, and received the advantages of an every day log-school house education and later learned the blacksmith trade. "When at the age of 20 years he joined a company of volunteer soldiers for the Mexican war at Nauvoo on the Mississippi river, but was never mustered in for service. At the age of 25 he was married to Mary J. Gibson, at Washington, Illinois, and raised a family of six children. Mr. Castle was temperate in all habits and had a strong constitution. He was a staunch anti-slavery man, and freely expressed his opinion on all public questions. In 1887 he came to Holt county, Nebraska, and in 1891 moved to Hitchcock county where he resided until death. He was a member of the Baptist church and lived an upright and earnest Christian life." Mr. Castle was well known to a great many friends in Washington and vicinity, and his death is regretted by many. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Mary Jane Gibson Castle is a sister to my g-g-grandfather. With some wonderful help from a researcher in Illinois, I have put together the following information on Orin (Orrin) and Mary Jane Gibson Castle. The 1850-1870 US Census records for Orrin and Mary Jane Gibson Castle were located. Mary Jane was listed at varied ages relative to the census years, but in 1850 and 1860 was listed as 21 and 31 years old respectively, which would have made her 11 years old in 1840 and her birth date about 1829. This couple was found in: . Washington Township, Tazewell County in 1850 o living with Orrin's father "Thos Castle" . Morton Township, Tazewell County in 1860 . Chenoa Township, McLean County in 1870 The children of this marriage, compiled across all of the census records are: 1. Thomas Elisha Castle b. Nov 1850 (listed as "Elisha" until 1900) 2. Edna M. Castle b. 1852 (listed as "Eden" and male in 1870) 3. Annanetta (Annette) Castle b. 1855 4. Gilman Castle b. 1859 (no longer in family group by 1870) 5. Milton (Marvin N.) Castle b. 1862 6. George Vivian Castle b. 1867 (listed as "Vivian" in 1870) 7. Ella M. Castle b. 1868 In 1880, Orrin D. Castle is back in Washington Township but his wife, Mary, was listed with the middle initial "S" and age 43. This record is not a mistake. Instead, the record accurately reflects a second marriage to Mary S. Tamplin, which occurred on the first of January 1873. Due to this marriage date, Mary Jane Gibson Castle must have died after the 1870 census, perhaps as late as 1872. In 1900, Orin is listed as widowed (later records drop the second "r"). In that census, Orin D. and Thomas E. are found in Hitchcock County Nebraska. Find a Grave has listings for Orin D. Castle (1824-1901) and his sister Edna M. Castle (1820-1898) also in Hitchcock County. The 1920 US Census has Thomas E. Castle working as a barber in Casper, Wyoming. Thomas Elisha Castle has a death record from Salt Lake City, Utah, recorded in August 1920. The death record refers to Mrs. E. M. Stinson (other records confirm this is the sister also named Edna) who cared for him his last 4 months of life. It also lists Orin D. Castle and Mary Jane Gibson as his parents. I did find a burial record for the younger Edna also in Salt Lake City Cemetery. Someone on Ancestry says that this Edna's middle name is Mariah. Have yet to see a record on that, but if accurate, would likely be in honor of her maternal grandmother, Mariah Scogins Gibson. As mentioned, above, a picture of the gravestone for Orin and his sister Edna are found on findagrave.com. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am related to the father of Orin's first wife, Mary Jane Gibson Castle and have developed quite a bit of information on the Gibsons and some on the Castles. If the author of this thread is out there still, please reply and let's share some information. If others are out there who are related to this line, I would like to share information with any of you as well. I am especially interested in sharing information with the person who has a tree that says the middle name of Orin's daughter, Edna, is Mariah. That information is potentially important to verify the mother of Mary Jane Gibson Castle. Thanks. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. She married George Castle in Ettington, Warwick in 1827. If they immigrated to Nelson NZ I believe she was my GGGgrandmother's sister and that two other siblings, William and Thomas Kite also came to NZ. William & Priscilla Kite came out on the "Thomas Harrison" and Thomas and Lucy Kite came out on the "Phoebe". I hope this helps. If you have any queries please respond. Rosemary.
