A native of Arkansas, he attended schools in Oklahoma and settled in California in 1935. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II and worked in construction following the war. He retired in 1972 and has lived in Newman since that time. Survivors include his wife Joyce, of Newman; three daughters, Dorothy Johnson, Nancy Mefford and Brenda Dinsdale, all of Sacramento; three sons, Jimmie Holmes of Washington, David Holmes of Lancaster and Walter Welker of Newman; two sisters, Bertha Nelson of Los Banos and Ollie Essman of Oklahoma; a brother, Tommy Holmes of Kentucky; and 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
