Brown, 67, in Modesto Irrigation District lateral No. 3 yesterday afternoon nearly 10 hours after his wife reported him missing. The police said Mrs. Brown, 1423 Tully Road, reported her husband, ailing and despondent, missing when she arose about 7:45 AM yesterday. After a patrol of the area, officers located a boy who remembered seeing a hat - similar to Brown's - lying near a canal drop, off Briggsmore between Tully and Carver Roads. The body of the longtime Modesto resident was discovered shortly after 5 o'clock by a dragging team. Investigators said there was no indication whether Brown fell or jumped to his death by drowning. The dead man's brother, James W. Brown, told officers the retired lumber yard worker had talked once of jumping from a bridge. Brown was a brother also of Amy B. Kohner and Adele B. Coffman, both Modesto, Roy L. Brown of Tracy, San Joaquin County, and Claribel Girdner of Essex, San Bernardino County. He also leaves three nephews and three nieces. He was a native of Tennessee. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at the Franklin & Downs Funeral Home at l:30 PM. Committal will be in the family plot.
