"If it was a way to communicate, whether it was print, television or radio, he was on it," said Leslie Van Nuys, his wife of 33 years. "He was a jack-of-all-trades." Mr. Van Nuys, 56, died last Monday at his Modesto home. He worked for 20 years as a telecommunications systems operator at Modesto Junior College. He was born Feb. 3, 1944, in San Francisco. During the Vietnam War, he served with the Air Force in radio and television services. He lived in Modesto the past 22 years. He was a member of Green Peace, the Sierra Club, the World Wildlife Federation, Defenders of Wildlife and the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, as well as the Humane Society and the Stanislaus County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Matthew Van Nuys and Melissa Raby, both of Modesto; and mother, Elizabeth Van Nuys of Modesto. A memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Colonial Chapel of Franklin & Downs.
