Surnames: HOOD WILLIAMS POOLE VANDAWATER VANDERVERKER, GRAVES, DAVIS Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/ZW.2ADI/2018 Message Board Post: Am looking for the following last names of ranchers/farmers mentioned in an 1853-4 diary of an ancestor (Charles Howe) who went to the gold rush and worked on these people's farms, mainly for Davis, who didn't actually own the spread much to our ancestor's surprise, but he also did raking and threshing for the others listed, or borrowed tools from them. Charles Howe lived in Springfield, Tuolumne Co. as did Mr. Davis who had a Meat Market in Columbia, but the farms, all near each other, to which they slowly herded livestock from Springfield were "across a river and a few days travel from Springfield" which could have put them in Stanislaus county. : ELIJAH L. DAVIS (borne in PA) Mr. WILLIAMS Mr. VANDERWATER ( I found an Isaac Vanderverker in Tuolumne Co who had a dairy farm and not sure if the diarist didn't know how to spell. A Mr. __ Vanderwater was listed in the old book The Saga of Old Tuolumne) as one who tended to some roads in 1853-4) Mr. HOOD (also called him OLD HOOD) Mr. POOLE A Dr. GRAVES was interested in buying the ranch according to the diary, but I don't know if the sale went through. I believe this was Dr. Philip Graves who owned a pharmacy in Columbia CA. Would you be able to tell me anything about these ranchers if they were in your county, please? Anne
