Don Pedro Bar is not the only mining town under water from the Don Pedro dam. The "powers that be" in the past and still to this day in California don't seem to care about the rich history of this state. They either demolish it or put it under water. I know, I live in Modesto and we have lost all of our wonderful old buildings in the city to new buildings and parking garages. Its a shame. ************************************** Get a sneak peek of the all-new AOL at http://discover.aol.com/memed/aolcom30tour

I found this interesting. DON PEDRO BAR Merced Express, October 30, 1936 EARLY DAY TOWN NOW UNDER LAKE An old California town, once teeming with life, now lies under 160 feet of water. This unusual addition to the lore of ghost towns was recently revealed by members of the WPA writers project, now compiling the American Guide, a six-volume handbook of the United States. The town was Don Pedro Bar, famed mining town of the gold rush days. From Don Pedro Bar, Well Fargo Express shipped over $13,000,000 in raw gold. In the presidential election of 1865, the old town cast 1,500 votes for president of the United States. Since 1923, Don Pedro Bar has been under 160 feet of water, backed up by the $5,000,000 Don Pedro dam. In the Tuolumne river this dam forms the reservoir from which the Modesto and Turlock irrigation districts are supplied.

This happened a lot when they blasted in the old mines. I think it is Carbon Monoxide but not sure that was caused by the blast. La Grange is in the foot hills on the Toulumne river. This river runs just out side of Modesto and if you fallow it up you will see La Grange. It was one of those gold mining towns. It still has a few people living there. Don't blink you might miss the place. Just found this today. McGINN, John SNEIDER, James Mariposa Gazette, July 23, 1892 Suffocated in a Well. John McGinn and James Sneider were instantly suffocated in a well at La Grange last Thursday by the deadly gas therein. They had been blasting the bottom of the well to make it deeper and McGinn lowered Sneider to survey the well. Suddenly Sneider was silent and McGinn asked the bystanders to lower him so he could see what was wrong. He became unconscious at once, the rope slipped from him and he fell to the bottom of the well. A miner named O'Brien insisted on going down, whereupon he was lowered and at once lost consciousness. He was drawn up in a limp condition and was afterwards delirious. When restored to reason he made another trip and fastened the rope to McGinn's body which was drawn out. A man named Carter was then lowered and he got Sneider's body. John McGinn, aged 69, was a native of Ireland and proprietor of the Fairview Hotel. Sneider was about 45 years of age and a native of Pennsylvania.
