Wonderful story. La Grange also has a wonderful Historical Museum, cared for and stimulated by descendants of some of the early families of the area. Displays of early dredging and hydraulic golf mining equipment, artifacts from the various cultural groups who helped work the mines (Chinese, Mexican, French, etc.). Photos of the La Grange school and community. Lake Don Pedro has stimulated recreational growth and Stanislaus County Parks has provided nice facilities in the town. The Modesto Bee, Saturday, May 5, 2001 had an extensive article about the La Grange Annual Homecoming Celebration held on Sunday, May 6 in the community.

    3. Posted on: Stanislaus County, Ca Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ca/Stanislaus/11248 Surname: Fairbanks ------------------------- Following was posted for Joe Fairbanks, please refer communication to him: James Goddard Fairbanks removed to Stanislaus County in 1858 or 1859 with his family. His daughter Emma Fairbankswas born in Mike's Gulch (4 Oct 1859), as was his son Robert B Fairbanks (16 Apr 1862) and his son deLos Fairbanks (16 Feb 1864, d. 25 Jul 1866 Oakdale, Stanislaus, California). Is it possible to further define where in the gold fields Mike's Gulch may be? Ellen (Smith) Fairbanks, wife of James Goddard, apparently had enough of living in Mike's Gulch, and they moved into Oakdale, where Ellen bore triplets 23 Jan 1867.. I would suppose it to be an item of notoriety to have triplets, and wonder if there arte news accounts of the event? Hannah Fairbanks was born in Oakdale 29 Apr 1870, as were Thomas Fairbanks on 25 nov 1872, George Fairbanks on 20 Nov 1874, Grace Fairbanks on 29 Jul 1876 and Minnie Fairbanks born 26 Apr 1878.. He must have moved in 1878 or 1879 to the gold fields of North Idaho, because he is found in the 1880 Idaho Census at Camas Precinct which is on Gold Hill in Northern Latah County, though at that time it was part of Nez Perce County. I would suppose Mike's Gulch would be near Oakdale. Is it possible that one of your members have knowledge of some of the gold fields? Is someone willing to look up any Fairbanks in the county Every Name Index? Being disabled, it is not possible that I research this myself, nor do I have funds to purchase that index. I thank you for any consideration that you may offer. Joe Fairbanks beaumont@pullman.com 508 E Street; P. O. Box 506 Albion, Washington 99102-0506

I stopped by the Lakewood Cemetery, but they said your aunt was not buried there. I may have given them the wrong first name, but will call them on Monday for further information. They did not have a Francis Emil Hinton listed either, but as you said, he died in Monterey County. The LaGrange Museum was open today, quite a nice museum, and a great study of the cultures (Indian, Chinese, Mexican and other prospectors), many artifacts discovered in the basement of the original buildings, and much memorabilia donated by local residents. None of them knew the name Hinton, but recommended I go to the Realty office. So I walked the block down the street to the Lake Don Pedro Realty, they gave me a map of the Lake Don Pedro area and showed me where Torre Road was and how to get there. They also gave me a couple of the newsletters they publish, and what appeared on the third page, but an ad for THE ROSE RANCH, Specialty Nursery. Opens beginning May 12, 10 am to 4 pm weekends only.
