Author: oonas89 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.california.counties.stanislaus/6461.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Thanks for getting back to me, Judy. Actually, I am not so much interested in Leonard as I am in finding out more information on his parents, specifically his father, August Leonard Wilson (born about 1860). I figured if I could find his obit perhaps that would shed some more light on my mysterious g.g.grandfather. He and my g.g.grandmother were both immigrants from Sweden to Stockton, Ca. I have found their marriage certificate from 1887, and my g.grandmother was born in 1888, but after Leonard's death I have not been able to piece together what became of August. I have not been able to find him in ANY Federal Census records (1890 would be the one I needed most, but as luck would have it, it was destroyed in a fire). I checked the California Voter Registers to no avail. In the 1900 Census Ida (Anderson) Wilson, his wife, was listed as married but head of household living in Oakdale. Where was August? I have heard rumors he may have worked as a cook on a ship so perhaps he was at work that day. Then I know that they either divorced or he died because in 1903 Ida remarried a man by the name of Edward Jesse. She then lived the remainder of her life in Contra Costa County where she died in 1960. From stories in the family August drank and she was very contemptuous when she spoke of him. Sorry this is so long. If you have any pointers on other places I could look, please let me know. I'd greatly appreciate it. Thank you, Oona Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: judyartley53 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.california.counties.stanislaus/6461.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi, Since Leonard was a child when he died, you might not find an obituary. However, if you want to pursue his obituary, contact the California State Library, library.ca.gov/calhist/genealogy.html . They have the largest collection of California newspapers in the state. They don't have the staff to look up obituaries but if you contact them, they will send you a list of local researchers who will do so for a fee. You mentioned the Cemetery having records they could release. What other information are you looking for? Maybe I can help. Author: lstlaurent160 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.california.counties.stanislaus/6466/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My great-aunt left her husband in Connecticut for the Wild-West! It was in 1914. There were no children involved. She was in her 30ties. In the east, she was a seamstress and a modist. She settled in Modesto, and lived there until her death in 1961. And she seemed to have lived alone. There does not seem to be another man involved. And nothing in the news about her.. I scanned through the Modesto Bee. Somehow she seemed to be quite at ease financially, had acquired properties. My question - Why Modesto ? I dont know anything about the history of that part of the world. What opportunities were there then for a single woman ? Thank you, Lou Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [CASTANIS] German emigrants
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: rider26 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.california.counties.stanislaus/6465/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Just in time for the holidays! A great stocking stuffer! If you haven't read it yet, The Peasant Kings is a must read. It's an historical novel depicting the lives of a German family who emigrated in the 1700's, from the village of Oberacker, Germany. These Dellinger men were the brothers Martin, Philipp, and Valentin who left in the 1740's, and their cousin Jacob who fled in 1733. The novel covers over 250 years of European and American history, terminating with the end of the American Revolutionary War. All historical information about places and events has been meticulously researched. Have you ever wondered about the details of how they managed to achieve such a move? Why did they want to leave their country? What was the Rhine journey like? How did they find a ship in Rotterdam? What were the conditions on the Atlantic voyage like? How did one search for and claim land in America? How did the Revolutionary War affect the lives of the settlers? The Peasant Kings will answer all those questions? If your ancestors were German immigrants of the 1700's - no matter their surname - this book will reveal to you a real story of their struggle to come to the New World. More than just a wonderful narrative; extensive endnotes and bibliography will aid your research about your own ancestors.
