Surnames: McPherson, Vivian, Crispin, Chatom, Sisk, Rose, Updike, Jones, McNeil, Griffin, Harter Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/ZW.2ADI/3659 Message Board Post: Modesto Evening News Jan. 31, 1915 A GOOD CITIZEN ANSWERS LAST SUMMONS Miller McPherson Dies in Modesto After Three Weeks of Suffering: Funeral Will Be Held Wednesday Afternoon at 2: o'Clock. Miller McPherson, a successful rancher and a well beloved citizen of this community since 1872, died yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the Modesto Sanitarium, the cause of complications from which he had been suffering the last three weeks. Before the measles had continued a week McPherson had begun to suffer from gangrene in the right leg, and January 19th the member was removed between the knee and him in hopes of securing relief. His condition steadily grew worse until death had its way. Miller McPherson was born near Healdsburg, Sonoma County, December 6, 1855, and came to this county when a boy of seventeen to begin work on what was then known as the Clark Ranch near Paradise Ferry. Industry and frugality counted with McPherson and before many years he was engaged at ranching for himself in the Westport section. He was married December 25, 1878 to Miss Emmaline Vivian and is survived by the wife and two children, a daughter, Mrs. D. D. Crispin, and a son, W. C. McPherson, both residents of Modesto. Farming and stock raising were made profitable by McPherson and he engaged at the business on his ranch six miles south of Modesto until moving to town in 1907. At the formation of the Turlock and Modesto Irrigation districts Miller McPherson was an earnest opponent of the project, but being elected a director of the Turlock district he put his best energy and thought into the work of making the movement a success. He served the Turlock district as director for nearly 20 years, and his conscientious and untiring attention to the work was no small factor in bringing the district to its present realization. He has also been a stock holder and director of the Farmers and Merchants bank the last several years. Besides his immediate family McPherson is survived by two brothers, Kirk McPherson of Sonoma county, and Early McPherson of Idaho. He is also survived by a community of friends, many of whom have known his kindness in times when kindness counted. During his illness the interest and hope of the community in his recovery was constantly shown in inquiry as to his condition and expression of regret as improvement failed to develop. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the family residence, 1108 Thirteenth Street. The services will be conducted by Rev. H. K. Pitman, pastor of the Presbyterian church. The music will be provided by the Temple Male Quartet. The pall bearers will be; A. Chatom of Turlock, W. H. Sisk, William Rose, I. W. Updike, J. I. Jones, and William McNeil, and honorary pall bearers, Attorney P. H. Griffin and W. A. Harter. The body is now at the undertaking parlors of Bowker & Wood.
