A. Richards Passed Away in Stockton Lost a Fortune by Embarking in Big Farming Venture L. A. Richards, the well known West Side farmer, died in Stockton, last Friday afternoon, after years of suffering from kidney complaint. His last illness began about two weeks ago. Mr. Richards was for many years a resident and property owner of Stanislaus County, and for some time farmed what is known as the Paradise gardens, near Modesto. The Stockton Record speaks as follows of the deceased: "Mr. Richards was one of the first settlers of the Grayson district, in Stanislaus County. Years ago, he was one of the best known farmers of that section. He owned several thousand acres of land on the West Side, but afterwards lost it. About twelve years ago, Mr. Richards served a term in the State Legislature, representing Stanislaus and Merced counties in the legislature. At one time he was a large stock-owner and breeder of fine horses. That was during the time when L. E. Shippee was interested in horses. "The deceased attained considerable prominence during the last few years of his life through a series of sensational suits against D. A. Guernsey, D. S. Rosenbaum, and P. B. Fraser and the Farmers & Merchants Bank, which were fought out in the local as well as in the State Supreme Court. In 1891 Mr. Richards and the above named gentlemen purchased three thousand acres of land in what is known as the Sargent tract, and embarked in a big farming venture. Richards claimed that Mesbrs.(sp?) Guernsey, Fraser and Rosenbaum refrauded him out of a sum of money consisting of several thousand dollars. The action was before the Supreme Court a number of times, and many of the most prominent lawyers in California were identified with the litigation. "Mr. Richards died at the age of 76 years." "The funeral services were held at the chapel of the B. C. Wallace undertaking parlors in Stockton, at 4 o'clock this afternoon. The remains will be taken, on Tuesday, to Oakland for cremation." Article transcribed as written in the Stockton Record.
