SIMONS-Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Allen Mortuary for Lena Dell Simmons, 82, who died Sunday at a local convalescent hospital after a long illness. Interment will be at Turlock Memorial Park. Visitation is from 5 p.m. today at the mortuary. A native of Missouri, she moved to Berkeley in 1941, and had lived in the Delhi and Turlock area since 1957. She is survived by two daughters, Edith Heckman of North Fork and Odessa Kelly of Missouri; two sons, William of Pleasant Hill and Richard of San Pablo; 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. The family requests that those who wish send remembrances to the heart fund, P. O. Box 1529, Modesto 95353. Have included information regarding Wright S Boddy and Birdie R Boddy. They are buried in the Oakdale Citizens Cemetery, BK 47 Lot 2. These were the only two BODDY'S buried in the Oakdale Cemeteries. <grin> Modesto Bee, July 8, 1940 WRIGHT S. BODDY OF OAKDALE DIES Former Postmaster Succumbs in Home after Lenghty Illness Oakdale - July 8 - Wright S. Boddy, 67, prominent Oakdale farmer, died yesterday noon in his home three miles southeast of Oakdale on the Cooperstown Road after an extended illness. He was born in Swallownest Village, Yorkshire County, England, on October 1, 1872. He came to California in 1881 with his parents to settle in Berkeley, where he received his education. When a young man, Boddy came to Oakdale and worked in a local bank, later entering the mercantile business. From 1914 to 1922, he served as postmaster here. Boddy was master of Oakdale Lodge No. 276, FAM for five different terms. On October 7, 1925, he was married to Miss Birdie Rickard, assistant postmistress of the local post office. His father, Rev. William Boddy, at one time was pastor of the Oakdale Free Methodist Church. A brother, Rev. William Boddy of Chicago, died last April. Besides his widow, he leaves a sister, Mrs. Amy Milltean of Shanghai, China, a missionary of the Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon in the Community Methodist Church with Rev. H. H. Allen of Turlock officiating. Interment will be in the Citizens Cemetery with the Masons in charge. I did not locate an obituary for Birdie R. Boddy. She was born Sept. 4, 1883 and died April 18, 1961 in San Francisco, CA. Her mother's maiden name was Covert. Late Monday afternoon Newman's Police Chief Leslie Jensen and Deputy Coroner Hal Davis entered the Hills Ferry home of Eisenhauer and found him dead. His body was wedged between his bed and stove. The time of death was fixed by Coroner J. K. Ransom at an inquest Tuesday as having taken place several days before. Death was attribted to a heart attack. For many years Eisenhauer had lived the life of a recluse near Newman and was known throughout the countryside. Although no food was found in the house, a bank book showe the aged man had more than $30,000 on deposit in a Newman bank. He owned valuable bonds, also, it was learned. The death certificate states the place of his birth is unknown as is his age, although he was believed to be well over 80. It is reported Eisenhauer has a sister, Mrs. Syvilla Collins, residing in Orange and is supposed to have three children in Pennsylvania. Colleen; John; I found Ruth in 1930, in Chicago IL with son William, the Pastor and wife Elsie, dau Helen. Not sure about son Wm J. I found Wright living in Stanislaus Co CA 1930, and it looks like he has remarried. I found Ebenezer and wife Emma in Acme, Whatcom Co WA. I found Samuel and wife Nellie in Seattle WA. "If it was a way to communicate, whether it was print, television or radio, he was on it," said Leslie Van Nuys, his wife of 33 years. "He was a jack-of-all-trades." Mr. Van Nuys, 56, died last Monday at his Modesto home. He worked for 20 years as a telecommunications systems operator at Modesto Junior College. He was born Feb. 3, 1944, in San Francisco. During the Vietnam War, he served with the Air Force in radio and television services. He lived in Modesto the past 22 years. He was a member of Green Peace, the Sierra Club, the World Wildlife Federation, Defenders of Wildlife and the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, as well as the Humane Society and the Stanislaus County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Besides his wife, he is survived by his children, Matthew Van Nuys and Melissa Raby, both of Modesto; and mother, Elizabeth Van Nuys of Modesto. A memorial service will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday at the Colonial Chapel of Franklin & Downs. VAN NUYS MAY 14, 1909 - JAN 31, 2005 Elizabeth passed away peacefully in her sleep at Pacific Coast Manor in Capitola after a short illness. Elizabeth was a native of Chicago, Illinois and after graduating from the University of Chicago, she moved to San Francisco, CA where she met and married the love of her life, H. Alan Van Nuys. They had one child, Peter Alan and in 1948 moved to Carmel, CA. In 1980, Elizabeth moved to Modesto, CA to be near her son and his family. In 2004, she moved to Capitola to be near her daughter-in-law and only grandchild. Elizabeth (called Wimsey by her grandson) was an accomplished artist and poet who had an adventurous spirit, a lust for life; an insatiable curiosity as well as an irreverent and zany sense of humor. She was preceded in death by her only sibling, Mary-Helen, her husband H. Alan Van Nuys and their only child, Peter. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Leslie Van Nuys of Soquel and grandson Matthew Van Nuys of Bonny Doon, CA.; who adored her and will miss her tremendously. As was typical of Elizabeth, she had a poem for every occasion and had penned these last words... I've broken almost all the rules but can't say I regret it. I simply smile and join the fools who laugh and say forget it At Elizabeth's request there will be no public services. Stanislaus County coroner's deputies on Thursday identified the man killed the night before in a single-vehicle crash as Christopher Steven Kroesen, 29, of Byron. He was the fourth person killed in less than a year on the four-mile stretch of highway between Lancaster Road and Knights Ferry, according to the California Highway Patrol. Kroesen was returning from a camping trip at Tulloch Lake at 8:24 p.m. when he lost control of his 1989 Dodge Dakota pickup at a sharp bend in the road, CHP officer Fred Fellows said. Kroesen, alone in his truck, was traveling about 65 mph when his truck swerved, slammed into a 45-mph speed limit sign and bounced down a ravine, Fellows said. When officers arrived, Kroesen was still strapped into his seat. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Fellows said about four unopened beer cans were found in or around Kroesen's pickup. An autopsy was performed Thursday, and officers are waiting for the results of toxicology tests to determine whether Kroesen was driving under the influence. A dangerous-curve sign is posted at least 300 yards before the spot where Kroesen's truck flew off the road. "It is a dangerous curve if you're not paying attention," Fellows said. "But if you drive attentively you should have ample time to slow down for the curve." Highway 108 is a windy road between Lancaster Road and Knights Ferry, but Fellows said that is not what causes all the wrecks there. Instead, Fellows blamed speed and distracted drivers. "The road is well-marked," he said. The other people killed on the same stretch of highway in the last 12 months, and the circumstances of the accidents: * Stephen Hogue, of Modesto, killed July 14 when the car he was driving drifted off the highway just east of Lovers Leap and struck a large oak tree. * Florence E. Darby, of Twain Harte, killed Dec. 2 in a head-on collision involving a car and van one mile east of Lancaster Road. Darby's husband, George Ernest Darby, was seriously injured in the crash.
