I beg to differ, not all Cass's in the US came from John Cass from England. Our Cass line is from Germany. In a few documents it is spelled KASS but the majority of them are CASS. I am hoping to find others interested in this line. Thanks, Cheryl Cass [email protected]
Hi: Thanks for taking us on. I do hae pretty good information to share with the other Cass family members. All Casses in the US are descended from John Casse or Cass. He was from England and came over here in around 1640. Think he arrived at Boston, and soon made his way up to Hampton, NH where he m. Martha Philbrick, dauther of Thomas. John was a Selectman and juror in Hampton. I do have his death date and would look it up if wanted. He and Martha had children...I have those also. One was the ancestor of Lewis Cass, who was a famous statesman and first Governor of Michigan Territory. He even ran for President. My ancestor was John's son, Ebenezer. His mother, Martha moved back to Boston and took the younger children with her. she remarried [also have the 2nd husband's name. They had an "Ordinary" or tavern. Anyone who would like further infco can dxropo me a note and I will help if I can. Jean
I didn't remember signing up for this list, but I do have one CASS link: Susie Carrie CASS, b. 04 June 1867, d. 07 April 1940, m. Daniel L. CRAPO, b. 26 July 1859, d. 28 October 1923. I have not pursued this side at all yet, and I'm not even sure where this couple was from, possibly Ohio. One son was named Claude CRAPO, b. 20 February 1885, d. 26 September 1915, locations unknown. Just in case it rings a bell with someone, I'll throw it out. Kathy in Nebraska
Hello, I have only one Cass relative that I know of but would love to find out who her parents were and more. Searching for the parents of Mary Elizabeth Cass b. abt 1791 in Surry Co., NC She married Henry Angell, son of Rev John Angell and Mary Griner. They moved to Tennessee and had one son, John Jefferson Angell. Mary Elizabeth died about the time of his birth...7-25-1813. I know nothing more about her but would welcome any lead on her family. Thanks for any help. Ann
Hi Gene, Thanks for taking on this list. I must have mistakenly subscribed to the list at some time or other. As you can see by my signature, I run the Cass Co., NE genweb site. I do not however have any surname of CASS in my genealogy. I hate to be one of those who immediately unsubs, but I think I must. -- Judy Ryden We cannot change the direction of the wind... but we can adjust our sails. I found that this list did not have a list admin. I take care of several other lists at rootsweb so I volunteered for this one. The message traffic has been very light. Not more than a dozen messages in over 3 years. Between the mail and digest version of the list there are 60 subscribers. This is larger than some other list I manage, but they have more message traffic. So we need to get some dialogue going. I've changed a parameter of the list so that replies go back to the list. Also I've added taglines so you can have the URLs of the Archives of the list available. If any of you have a webpage that includes CASS research, I can add the URL of your page as a tagline. My reason for joining this list is that all the children of an ancestor of my wife, Samuel Cass used the name CAST. This was according to information I found on the web a couple of years ago. I haven't actively pursued this line, but since I have hit brickwalls on most of my other lines, I'll see what I can find on this one. Also, I am going to a CAST family reunion this summer and would like to take some concrete info on this family. Gene Phillips CASS surname list admin. All of this sounds very familiar to Cass County, NE Does anyone know members of this family who are living and would like to claim these Bibles? o I have three Bibles from the GHENT/CRABTREE family. They were found in a Goodwill store in Cadillac, Michigan. -- Eunice A. CRABTREE married Harry A. GHENT in Nebraska, at the St. Stephens Episcopal Church. Rev. David Gracie officiated, Barbara LACY and Jacqueline LOUDEN were witnesses. Their children, grandchildren, etc. are listed in these Bibles. Some items included are: -- Newspaper clipping about the memorial service for Lois Marie GHENT and Joyce Ann GHENT: daughters of Air Force Sergeant and Mrs. Harry GHENT. The girls died in a fire at their home at Christmas time 1969. According to the Bible the girls were the grandchildren of M. Hilda CRABTREE. -- Births of the following are also listed: Edith June; Beverly May; Donald Marcus; Joyce Elizabeth; Lois Marie; Anthony Michael; Shawn Christopher Murphy; Chelsea Nicole Taylor; Rachel Renee Taylor; Michaela Joy Ghent. -- Marriages for the following are listed: Beverly May and Ed Taylor; Donald M. and Teri; Anthony M. and Joylene. -- Deaths listed are: Joyce and Lois, 26 December 1969 These Bibles seem to be well used and two are in leather(?) Cases (not sure of the material). I would like to get all three of these Bibles to their family. I just found out additional info on my husband's great grandfather. His name was Ignatius Cass but he also went by John Cass. He was born 03-20-1843 in Germany. I believe that he might have been married there and had at least one child, Felix. He came to Chicago, Illinois in 1881 and married Cecilia Tobiaski (unknown where this marriage took place). They had at least three children, Sophie, Frank and Thomas, all in Chicago. He died July 25, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois. Does any of this ring a bell with anyone? Thanks, Cheryl Cass [email protected]

Hi Ric & Cheryl, I don't have a Frank Michael Cass, but I feel strongly that he might be related. In the will, do you have any of these people: William P. Cass or Wilbur J. Cass (Twins) b. 20 Oct 1880? (Wilbur changed his name to John W. so not to be confused with Wm.) Patrick Cass b. 17 May 1832 Ireland married 22 Nov 1865 Ligonier, Indiana + Joanna Hannah Casey b. 20 Dec 1847 Boston, Massachusetts 10 Children: Lillie b. ca 1866 who married Donald (Doc) Bailey (no children) Mary b. ca 1868 who married Charles Francisco (3 children) Frank b. ca 1870 who married Gertrude (3 children) Michael b. ca 1872 who married Mabel (3 children) Thomas b. ca 1878 who married Lizzie (4 children) William P. b. 20 Oct 1880 who married Elizabeth (3 children) John W. b. 20 Oct 1880 who married Belva (5 children) Timothy b. ca 1882-84 who married Henrietta (3 children) Anna b. ca 1886 who married Frank Zeigler (5 children) Patronella b. ca 1888 who married Paul Parker (no children) These are the Cass's I am working on. I feel that possibly your Frank Michael may be a nephew of our Patrick. All of Patrick's & Joanna's children were born in St. Joseph County, Indiana, very close to Chicago. Any discussion? I am attempting to locate relatives of my husband's grandfather, Frank Michael CASS. He was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1884. He married Elsie SCHWARTZ. I very recently found out that he had a sister named Sophie who married a KLOSS, she died in 1956 in Chicago. On her will there were other members of the CASS family named but I haven't had any luck in locating them. Any information you can provide will be appreciated very much. Cheryl Cass [email protected]
My gggrandmother Jane Cass, born about 1832 AL married Calvin W. Bettis in Lawrence Co., AL 1 June 1848. Their children : Lucinda born about 1851 Lawrence Co., married Joseph Terry 28 Dec.1869 and moved to Texas; Thomas born Jan 1852 married Mary Jane Gallaher 23 Jan. 1876 and moved to Texas; Willie Francis born 10 Jun 1856 married first Thomas Nunn in Giles Co., TN 9 Dec. 1876, then John Percy Troublefield in Union Co., MS in 1885; Wm H born 1850 and died before 1860; another child born and died during the Civil War. Cal served in the war, however briefly, and later (1874) was stabbed to death "in a melee" near Courtland, AL. The only other Cass people in Lawrence County at this time were Lucinda, who was born about 1836 and married Stephen Terry 1 June 1850 and George Cass, who was born about 1828 according to the census. Are there any Cass connections out there? Betty H
I have a couple friends who are the grandson of the couple in the subject line. If they have cousins here, I'll give Hillbilly and Bubba a quick and dirty e-mail class and get'em online. The furthest back they have family info is: Findley L. Cass b circa 1900-1905 spouse: Addie Young b October 1907, Gum Spring Mt., outside Sparta, Tenn. Addie and Findley had a total of 13 children, 11 of whom lived to adulthood, unfortunately they only have the names for 9 of them. Those 9 are: (1) Mary Lee Cass: 1st husband was a Sparkman, 2nd hubby was Gains Gamble (2) Charley Cass : was in the Navy. Had 2 sons--Steve and Frank (3) James Melborn Cass (twin of Viola) b circa 1939/m Judie circa 1962/d 1969, Sparta, Tenn. James R (A) (from whom I got the above info and permission to post it here) moved back to Tennessee when he was 12, but came back to the Pacific Northwest a few years ago, with his daughter, Julie, and the above info in his head. I am looking for a George Cass who lived in Colorado Springs, CO in the early 1900's and 1930's. He was married to Donna Van Meter in about 1934 while living in San Fransisco. He also had a son when he moved back to Colorado Springs and married another woman whose name I do not know. He may have used variations of the name Cass such as Casick. He was born in about 1909 and was a Roofer by trade. Thanks for any possible information. Siri Whalen
