I am looking for information regarding John Q Cass and wife Maria of Quebec who were foster parents to Kristie/Christa Dean of Sweden. She is the sister of my great grandmother and lived with them after her mother died and her father went to NY looking for work never to return. I am not sure how many years she lived with them. They lived with separate families in Quebec after their mother died and the father went to look for work never to return. This is what I know about Ellen and Christa: Ellen lived in Quebec with John (33)& Amanda(30) Statton who had a son Nelson Statton (1). She was with them from about age 6/7 to age 18 when she married. Kristie/Christa lived with John Q A Lass/Cass (53) and Maria (34), Maurice (14) all US born, Arthur (5) Everett E,(4) and unnamed (5/10) all born Quebec. On page 19 of the 1871 census for Quebec in the district of #142 - Compton; sub-districts of Newport, Ditton, Chesham. Compton & Emberton - I also found Ellen Dean age 8 living with the family of John and Amanda Statton who had a son named Nelson age 1. They are listed from England. (On the same reel page 36, I found her sister Kristie Dean age 10 living with John Q A Lass/or Cass. He is from US with an origin of Scotch. Kristie listed as born in Sweden & Origin as Swede.) Is it Krista/Christa ? In letters sent from New York to family she uses Christie/Christa Ross presumably she was married. Envelopes with her last known address as of 1956 are as follows: Ross, Apt - 19 615 W 136 Street New York 31 -NY Ellen Dean is my great grandmother and lived with the Statton family until married on October 30, 1880 to Frye Holbrook Holden of Colebrook, NH. He was working in the Quebec area when they met. Ellen and Frye are on the 1881 Quebec census but moved to Colebrook, NH in 1888. They are listed on the Colebrook, NH 1900 census. October 1940 in Ellen Dean Holden's obituary it lists Nelson Statton of Bulwer, Quebec as attending her funeral along with Robert French. The French family were neighbors on the 1871 census. I am looking for anyone who might know anything about this family and the connection to my great grandmother. Are there any living relatives of John Q Cass or Nelson Statton who might know more about the story of how and why Ellen or Christa lived with them? Or have any letters or photos they might have sent to their foster family? The family stories are that they came from Stockholm, Sweden where Ellen and Christa were born. Their last name was Sundin and changed to Dean. About 1868/9 when Ellen was 6 and Christa 8 their father & other landowners sold their land holdings and took their families to America headed for NY. But for some unknown reason they all ended up in Quebec. While aboard ship the mother had a baby that died. Then their money was stolen so they were broke and in a foreign land unable to speak the language. Once they landed in Quebec the mother took soiled clothes to the nearby brook to wash. She caught cold then got worse and died. She is suppose to be buried in the Island Brook Cemetery. Afterwards their mother died the father left the girls with separate families and told them that as soon as he got a job and settled, he'd be back to get them. The children never saw him again. Ellen never forgave him and I don't know if she ever saw him again. Stories are that he had another family in NY. As an adult her sister Christa lived in New York. Sometimes Christa would sign letters Christie. Ellen told her grandchildren that the family that took her in were so kind and understanding when she cried day and night for weeks they never got after her about it. Her oldest daughter is named Ada Amanda. Is this for her foster mother, Amanda Statton? Scraps of paper indicate the Christa had 2 daughters but no names were indicated. I am hoping there is someone who can fill in the blanks about the lives of Ellen and Christa. Rita Dickinson Weimer Maine

Seeking information on the ancestry of this line, either James Samuel Cass (CAST) and/or Nancy Moody Dan Scott [email protected] (1) 1 James Samuel CASS (CAST) ---------------------------------------- Birth: 1738, Knaresborough, York, England Death: 5 Jul 1816, Salisbury, Irdell, NC, age: 78 Alias: Last Name recorded as CAST Father: Robert CASS IV (~1710-) Mother: HARVIL James CAST, at the age of 7 years was pressed into the British Royal Navy by a Press-gang and made to serve as Powder-monkey on the gunboat. At age 21 or 22, (1759 - 1760) the boat landed at Philadelphia, PA for repairs; there he escaped and followed the Quaker Trail to Guildford, NC. In 1765 he married Nancy and they had 11 children. After 1790 James and his wife Nancy, went to Clarke Co., KY to visit their sons. While there James met two Englishmen by the name of CASS. After becoming acquainted with them he learned that one was his brother, the other his cousin. Then for the first time learned that his name was CASS and not CAST as he had been called on the boat. He related these facts to his sons and they very generally returned to the original name CASS. James Cass and Nancy returned to Iredell co, NC where he died between Jan. 15 and July 15, 1816 as his Will was probated July 15, 1816. Notes Per Adah Daniel-Gould (Mrs. J.B.) of Fort Scott, Kansas (in! 1955) At age seven or eight, James Cast was pressed into the British Navy by a "Press-Gang", and made to serve as a powder-monkey on a gunboat. When the boat landed for repairs at Philadelphia, PA in 1740, he escaped and made his way into NC. In 1765 he married Nancy with whom he had eleven children. After 1790 James and his wife, Nancy, went to Clarke Co., KY to visit their sons. While there, James met two Englishmen by the name of CASS. After becoming acquainted with them, he learned that one was his brother, and the other his cousin. James Cass and his wife returned to Iredell Co., NC where he died between 15 Mar 1816 - 15 Jul 1816. His will was probated 15 Jul 1816, and Adah Daniel-Gould stated she had a copy in 1955. Charles C. Hi all I'm after information on the following line ? Cass married Thelma Spitty They had Sandra, Graham, Barbara, and Lesley All i know is Thelma's grandmother was born in 1869 in Kensington, Victoria, Australia. Thanks in advance, Ainslee
Hello all, We are looking for help with our researches, and wonder if SKS could help in any way. Our researches into our Playle family show that Florence Mary Sheppard married William John Playle in 1898. Florence was born 11 August 1879 at Royden Hamlet, Essex, the daughter of John James and Alice Amelia Sheppard (formerly Cass). They married 8 October 1876 at Great Parndon, Essex. We have a copy of the marriage certificate for John and Alice. There are no details for Alice's father, and we understand that means that either Alice did not give them (sounds rather odd, church wedding, her new husband had just given the corresponding details for his father...)or that she did not know them. We've looked at IGI and this revealled an Alice Cass, the daughter of Jane Cass who was christened on 23 October 1860 at Stansted Abbots, Hertfordshire. If nothing else, the ages fit. If anyone has information that might be of use, we'd be very grateful if you would contact us. Many thanks Steve and Jan Goldsmith http://website.lineone.net/~steve_and_jan
Wow, you certainly have a quest. I only have two Cass. Samuel Cass b 1783 in MD son of Bowman Cass. Samuel married Leticia Tayler. For some reason that I haven't been able to figure out, all of their 8 children used the name CAST. I went to a Cast family reunion this past summer , but neglected to ask if anyone knew the answer to this riddle. I too would be interested in the Cass site at my family.com. I also have a site there myself. I am descended from John Cass and his Daughter Martha who married John Redman, and then married into the Rawlins/Rollins family. I will gladly give return access to my site, though my Cass info is limited. Adam Rollins
