Hi Linda, Well, if Asa's relatives are there then you have found your Cass line. That is great! Grandma Augusta (Wagner) Bruce was born in 1869 and when she died in 1974 at age 105 she was the last survivor of the Peshtigo fire. They survivied by going into the river and staying under wet blankets where the smoke was not so thick. Grandma said her mother would put the palm of her hand under grandma's chin and pinch her nose shut with two fingers and go under each time the blankets started to dry out, staying under as long as possible and thoroughly wetting them. Hi, I am looking for cass family historians who are interested in researching the Cass family during the 17th century. And who also live in the New England area. To compare notes, and occasionally get together to make trips to local area libraries. John Cass Arlington, MA
Jan, First of all, who was your paternal grandmother from Peshtigo? I wrote Bryan for an invitation. His rootsweb site does not have Asa but has two of his relatives in it, Sybil Jackson who married Joseph Pomery Cass & Anna Cass who married a Josiah Jackson. Linda, I am descended from Hannah Cass who married in NY, moved to Ontario Canada with others of her family, then to WI in 1841. She had a brother, Joel Cass, and several others. Go here and ask for an invitation to the site Bryan has. It has most of the Descendents of John Casse. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~cassb/CASS/ Then lets compare trees if you find Asa in that tree. My paternal grandma was from Pestigo. Hi Girls: We are all descendants of John Casse & Martha Philbrick!? E-mail me in late September or early October and ask me for whatever information you need on your line.? I am from John, Ebenezer, etc. down to Milo Cass and Julia Roberts who left NY for IL in 1860. I am away for the summer and didn't bring my Cass stuff [or much of it anyway]. Jan, I checked the list of the dead & didn't find any Wagner. There is this in the survivor section: Wagner, Johanna and John Casper and their daughter Augusta (contributor's note: Mother, step-father and half-sister of William Kiel. I will slip it in the mail, but this will be a disappointment, as he does not follow Josiah at all. Just, "Josiah b. at Hebron, Feb 2, 1738." I believe my Grandmother's brother, Albert Wagner died at Pestigo too. I did not know he ever existed until after we left Pestigo, so did not check the known dead while there. I've "rescued" an old photograph of Ulta & Ora CASS which was taken at the Hutchings Studio in Ottumwa, Iowa. The photograph appears to have been taken in the early 1900's with the two girls likely about 12-16 years old at the time it was taken. Based on limited research I believe that these girls are the children of C. & Jane N. CASS who were recorded in both the 1900 and 1920 census records as follows: 1900 census in Center, IA: C. CASS, age 66, born Oct 1833, married 22 years, born in MO, parents born MA/KY Jane N. CASS, wife, age 46, born July 1853, married 22 years, 2 children/2 living, born in KY, parents born in Scotland Ulta CASS, dau, age 20, born Aug 1879, born in IA, a Cigar Maker Ora CASS, dau, age 15, born Jan 1885, born in IA 1920 census in Ottumwa Center, IA: Jane N. CASS, age 66, a widow, born in KY, parent born Scotland Uita CASS, dau, age 40, born in IA, parents born MO/KY, a Bookkeeper I'm hoping to locate someone from this CASS Family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to their care. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
Yes, I'm the list admin. Someone is trying to access the list tools where I take care of maintaining the list memberships, settings, etc. I'm sure it's just a mistake. No big deal, but I get a message each time someone enters the wrong password. Thanks, Gene Phillips Cass Surname List Admin
