RUBY BEFFA Published on February 18, 1996 © 1996- The Press Democrat PAGE: B2 Ruby Freeman Beffa drove to the grocery store three days before suffering a stroke a week before she died Wednesday at a Santa Rosa hospital. She was 89. Her daughter, Janice Memeo of Santa Rosa, said Beffa was proud of having her driver's license renewed last year for four years. She was born in Jenkins, Minn. She moved to Petaluma from Minnesota before settling in Santa Rosa 48 years ago. Beffa and her first husband, Max Freeman, owned and operated the Polyann Motel in Petaluma about 10 years. Her first husband died in 1951. She eventually worked for about 15 years in central supply at Community Hospital, retiring in 1969. Her second husband, William Beffa, died in 1980. She enjoyed camping, fishing, picking blackberries and gathering walnuts from her own tree. She was a member of the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church and a former member of the Sonoma County Retired Employees Association. Besides Memeo, Beffa is survived by her daughters, Audrey Ralston of Eureka, Opal Peterson of Lakeport, and Kay Olson of San Jose; son, Wayne Freeman of Santa Rosa; sisters, Grace Blotzer of Springfield, Ore., and Beulah Vrieling in Idaho; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Services will be held at noon today at Daniiels Chapel of the Roses, 1225 Sonoma Ave. in Santa Rosa. Private burial will be at Santa Rosa Memorial Park.
