Lawrence was born July 22, 1912 in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He was a long time resident of Sonoma. He received a B.A. from George Williams College in Illinois and a M.S.W. from the University of Pittsburgh. He retired as Chief of Social Services at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Saginaw, Michigan. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army and was wounded in the European theater in World War II. An avid golfer, sailor and expert bridge player, he is survived by his wife of 63 years, a sister, Mildred Hollenbeck and two sons, Jack Meltesen, of Mill Valley and Chris Meltesen, of New York, New York. He is also survived by his two daughters-in-law, Dianne Meltesen and Tina Raver; grandchildren Kristin Ferguson, Eric Meltesen, Kim Raver and Cybele Raver; and great-grandchildren Samantha Ferguson, Jake Ferguson, Natalie Raver-Goldsby, and Luke Boyer. Friends are invited to a memorial service at the First Congregational Church of Sonoma on Sunday, Aug. 28, at 3 p.m. Memorial contributions may be sent to the American Red Cross or the Nature Conservancy.
