She had a stroke several years before and as she aged she became a wanderer along with other dementia related probems. At that time there were no board and care homes or convalescent hospitals nor live in caretakers anywhere near where she lived in Northern California and the State Hospital was the only facility that could give her the 24 hour care she needed.
