It is always free at hunterscabin Washington Post, The (DC) - July 11, 1992 Deceased Name: ROBERT BAIRD -- Marine Pilot Robert Baird, 70, who became the first Marine Corps pilot to be designated an "ace" for night fighting when he shot down six enemy planes in the Okinawa campaign in World War II, died July 7 at a hospital in Sonoma, Calif. He had spinal meningitis. Col. Baird, who served in the Marine Corps from 1942 to 1971, was awarded the Navy Cross, the Marine Corps' highest decoration for bravery except for the Medal of Honor, for his feat at Okinawa. He also was a veteran of the wars in Korea and Vietnam. His other decorations included the Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross.
