It is always free at hunterscabin Washington Post, The (DC) - July 11, 1992 Deceased Name: ROBERT BAIRD -- Marine Pilot Robert Baird, 70, who became the first Marine Corps pilot to be designated an "ace" for night fighting when he shot down six enemy planes in the Okinawa campaign in World War II, died July 7 at a hospital in Sonoma, Calif. He had spinal meningitis. Col. Baird, who served in the Marine Corps from 1942 to 1971, was awarded the Navy Cross, the Marine Corps' highest decoration for bravery except for the Medal of Honor, for his feat at Okinawa. He also was a veteran of the wars in Korea and Vietnam. His other decorations included the Silver Star and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Benjamin was a single man and worked for some time at Fisk's Mill, Timber Cove, Sonoma County. Benjamin emigrated from Eldron's Cottage in Smithborough, Co. Monaghan, Ireland in 1848/9 and moved around quite a bit for the first few years. At the time of the 1870 census he was living with a Joseph and Olivia GORDON, working as a Clerk in Joseph's general Store at Tomales, Marin, California. It seems that he eventually settled in Salt Point, Sonoma County and may have died there. Any information regarding Benjamin would be greatly appreciated. Herman had 11 children two of them came to the US in the 20's. My grand father being one of them. So the captain was my grand fathers uncle and worked on the steamers for a time.
