I have been looking through the 1940 census searching for my various relatives. One genealogy site made the suggestion that people look up their current addresses. I hadn't thought of that but immediately went to try it. I live on Gossage Ave in Petaluma, CA. It's a one mile long street where both ends are in the Petaluma city limits and the middle (where I am) is in unincorporated Sonoma County. Looking at Steve Morse's excellent site, the Sonoma County drop down menu for towns has Petaluma, Santa Rosa, and other. There is no way to do street searches with unincorporated (it's not recognized) and the closest unincorporated town to me is Penngrove (if you get the right town, the EDs do come up, but no list of streets). It does appear though that the streets surrounding Gossage Ave are in the Petaluma EDs. But Gossage is not included. My house was built in 1956 (my family has only lived here since 2002), so I wasn't sure if I'd find this property, but I wasn't expecting the entire street to be missing. Given the age of many of the buildings, there must have been some street there. Those of you who know this area, do you know if Gossage Ave had a different name in 1940? For that matter, is there a 1940 Petaluma map online? (I know I can find one in the library next week.) I may not be related by blood or marriage to the Gossage family but, living here, I still feel some connection. Thanks to all who contributed to this thread.
