Aanestad, MD Monday, August 22, 2005 5:14 PM PDT Robert W. Aanestad, MD 08.23.05 - Dr. Robert W. Aanestad, 85, died at home on Aug. 20, 2005, in Sonoma, after a long struggle with many illnesses. Dr. Aanestad was born and raised in Minnesota where he entered the University of Minnesota at age 15, earning his degree in the sciences and a minor in philosophy, followed by his medical degree. He married June, in 1943 and moved to San Francisco where he did his internship and residency at Franklin Hospital. He began his family practice in 1947 and retired in 1983. He worked primarily at Saint Luke's Hospital and Franklin Hospital (which became Ralph K. Davies' Hospital). For many years, Robert volunteered regularly at Cannon Kip Clinic for low-income patients. Dr. Aanestad was very proud of his service to this country. He was enlisted in the Army; later joined the Army Reserves and served for 26 years, retiring with the rank of colonel. He and his wife June raised seven children. During his practice, the needs of his patients and community came first, followed by those of family, and lastly his own. He was a man of few words, but the few he chose were of full measure. He had a gentle hand, was kind and compassionate, living proof that actions speak louder than words. Although he was a city doctor, he referred to himself as an "old country doctor." He delivered babies, assisted with surgeries, and was on call 24/7, 365 days a year. Before losing his sight, shortly after retirement, he was an avid golfer and bowling enthusiast. He regularly made it to the Lincoln golf course at dawn to play nine holes before making his hospital rounds, seeing patients in his office, and making house calls ... even in the middle of the night. He is survived by June, his loving and devoted wife of 63 years, their surviving children Karin Morrison, Kathy Aanestad and her life partner, Veda Lewis, Nancy Strongin and her husband, David, Erik Aanestad, and Susan Abouata, and her husband, Elie; grandchildren Phillip Morrison, Christina, Robert, and Paul Aanestad, Joseph, Sarah, and Perry Abouata; and his sister, Dorothy Porter, nephews, Al and Brad Porter, and niece, Abigail Balland; and cousin, Amy Schneider who was like a daughter to him. Dr. Aanestad practiced his belief in the Creator's message of "love your fellow man." He did his best to treat everyone equally, always open and affirming in his actions. He was a caring and an excellent listener. He summarized his philosophy in the following words, from St. Paul's Church in Baltimore, Maryland: "Go placidly amid the noise and haste and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, you may become vain and bitter. For always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career however humble, it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs for the world is full of trickery, But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself; especially do not feign affection and neither be cynical about love, for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings, many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe. No less than the trees and the stars, you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive God to be; and whatever your labors and aspirations in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul." Even in death the sun still shines. The family will sorely miss you but applaud your life's work. In loving memory, your family. Friends are invited to a memorial service on Friday, Aug 26. at 2 p.m. Please call for more details, 935-6690. Arrangements under the direction of Duggan's Mission Chapel, Mission Cremation Service.

CUROTTO 05.31.05 - Longtime El Verano resident John D. Curotto died on May 20, 2005, after a long illness. He was 89 years of age. Mr. Curotto was born June 6, 1915, in San Francisco. His parents, Pietro and Maria Curotto, were farmers from Borzonasca, Italy, and had come to America temporarily on work visas. Shortly after Mr. Curotto's birth, they returned to their native Italy and there Mr. Curotto lived until he was approximately 20 years old. Life in Italy was extremely difficult, economically and politically. It was also dangerous for a young American citizen. At the first rumblings of war, his family insisted that he return to the United States, rather than risk fighting for the fascist forces of Mussolini. John's wife, Margaret, said he was very firm in his loyalty to his birth country, vowing to "never fight against America." John never saw his parents again. His younger brother, Nicola was a partisan, fighting for the freedom of Italy. He was executed because of his beliefs and, in part, because he supported the Americans who had, by then, entered the war. Traveling with a cousin, John returned to California with $2 in his pocket and no English-language skills. He worked first in Stockton, but found the dry, hot weather too stifling, so he went to work for an indoor nursery on Geneva Street in San Francisco. The outdoor life was more to his liking on the vegetable farms in the Lake Merced area of San Francisco where he toiled long and hard to start his new life in America. Of those earliest days, his daughter recalls her father saying, of his impoverished state, that "napkins would have tasted good." He then went to work for the Sunset Scavenger Company, eventually becoming a partner in that company. He was a boarder in the home of Giuseppe Fontana and his wife, Giulia. It was she who was the matchmaker, and in 1938 John married Margaret Fontana at Mission Dolores Catholic Church, in San Francisco, a union that lasted for almost 67 years. They lived in San Francisco but spent their spare time on the property that they purchased in El Verano in August 1947. Room by room, weekend upon weekend, together they built the home where their children were raised and where Margaret still resides. After leaving Sunset Scavenger Company in 1953, Mr. Curotto worked briefly in Petaluma. He and his wife bought the Sonoma Garbage Collector from Angelo Bertoni in August 1954. The Curotto's still have the 1953 Ford garbage truck that was included in the purchase. Mr. Curotto's son, John Jr., said, "He was a one-man crew, no vacation, no holidays, no sick leave, no nothing." His wife, Margaret, did all of the bookkeeping. The children helped their parents with the door-to-door bill collecting every other month. Once, he fell off a vehicle and cracked several ribs making his job extremely painful, so his partner, Margaret, pulled out the full garbage cans to make them more accessible to John, making the task easier for him, enabling them to maintain full service to their customers. On the rare occasion that he was sidelined, his brother-in-law, Dino Queirolo, also helped out on the route. In 1960, upon his graduation from Sonoma Valley High School, John Jr. joined his Dad on the job. They would stop for coffee every morning at Billie's and later at the L&N Donut Shop, forming friendships that last to this day. Their daughter, Jo Anne, heads the bookkeeping and office side of the business, with grandsons Kevin and John also in the garbage business, making Sonoma Garbage truly a family-run company located in the original El Verano location. Staying close to his farm roots, John cut and baled his own hay for the cattle that he raised, had a bountiful vegetable garden and made his own olives and wine. Easter gatherings in their home always featured Margaret's homemade ravioli and John's "own-grown" capretto and chicken on the barbecue. Sunday afternoons meant playing bocce with friends or a card game of Pedro and dancing with his favorite partner, Margaret, at Little Switzerland. John has been a member of the Sons of Italy, Valley of the Moon Lodge No. 1959, since 1955. Ig Vella, a longtime friend, said Mr. Curotto always said what was on his mind. "He was sincere. He wouldn't say anything unless he could back it up," Vella said. "He was one of the old-style Italians," Vella said. "You didn't need a contract. He worked on a handshake. His word was his bond." A neighbor, Jim Parks, said Mr. Curotto was plain-spoken. "He never put on any airs. He was very proud of what he did." John was the beloved husband of Margaret (Fontana) Curotto; the adored father of John Jr. (Connie) and Jo Anne Meroney. He was "Butch" to his loving grandchildren Kevin and John Curotto, Scott and Molly Meroney; great-grandson John Brady Curotto, all who will miss him terribly. John is also survived by his devoted and loving sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Florence and Dino Queirolo; his dear sister-in-law, Elsie Fontana, numerous nieces and nephews, for whom he was "larger than life"; his brothers Carlo, Pasquale, Natale and sister, Margherita, all in Italy, his brother Eddie (Virginia), of San Francisco, and Charlotte Noonan, his wonderfully compassionate "niece." John's passing will also be mourned by his extended family, Carmen, Maria and Kathleen, who were very dear to him. He was predeceased by his parents, Pietro and Maria Curotto, his sister Ida and brother Nicola. A memorial Mass will be offered for Mr. Curotto at noon, Saturday, June 4, at St. Francis Solano Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions be made to the charities of the donor's choice. Arrangements by Duggan's Mission Chapel.

Charles was born on April 19, 1920, in Petaluma, son of Marie (Andersen) Deenihan and Charles Patrick Deenihan. His mother later married Henry Larsen, and in 1928 the family moved to Sonoma, where they ran a dairy and horse-farming business. He attended the Sonoma Grammar School and graduated from Sonoma Valley High School in 1937, setting records in track, field, hurdling, and pole-vaulting. After studying at Santa Rosa Junior College, Charles worked at the Sonoma Post Office. His job was interrupted in 1941, when he entered the United States Army and was sent to the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 20, 1945, and was awarded the Bronze Star, a Bronze Star Medal, a Good Conduct Medal, and an American Campaign Medal. His years in the military gave him a love of travel, and he often spoke of the different countries, especially the Philippines and Australia. He returned to his job at the post office, and it was there that he met the love of his life, Jeanne. Charles and Jeanne were married on Saint Patrick's Day, in 1950. In 1953, "Charlie," as he was known to friends and acquaintances, started working with State Farm Insurance on a part-time basis. Seeing an opportunity for his young family, he eventually retired from the post office to focus on his own agency full-time. While his children were growing up, Charles was active in the St. Francis Solano School Father's Club. He belonged to the Native Sons of the Golden West, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Chamber of Commerce. He enjoyed participating in local events, especially the Vintage Festival and the annual State Farm family picnics. During his 33 years as a successful State Farm agent, Charles was respected and well liked throughout the community. Friends and clients remember his sense of humor, and the way he treated each person with courtesy and respect. Charles loved a good conversation, and he loved to talk about Sonoma. When his children asked about the "old days," he would entertain them for hours. Family and friends sat around the table losing track of time as they talked and laughed and shared familiar stories. Charles had a quiet side, but he was Irish, and the "gift of the gab" was always there behind his shy smile. Charles had a deep respect for animals and nature, and he liked to watch the seasons change, especially in his walks around the vineyards near his home. He often noticed things before anyone else. He was fond of the night sky, and liked to name the stars. Charles was a great reader, and loved books of all kinds. Charles revisited Australia and took trips to Ireland and Hawaii. He enjoyed his travels, but the journey he may have loved the most was when he danced in the kitchen with Jeanne, and they sang the song about taking a slow boat to China. His beloved wife, Jeanne (Phyllis Jeanne Kenyon) Deenihan died in August of 2003. They were married for 53 years. Charles was a kind and gentle man. He was a gentleman, in every sense of the word. Charles is survived by his brother Bob (Alice) Larsen, and nephew Ken (Amy) Larsen of Cotati; his children Jill (James) Kamahele, Beth-Marie (Thomas Crystle) Deenihan, William (Maria Elena Gil) Deenihan, Michael (Denise Halbe) Deenihan, Susan Deenihan, Patrick (Diane Lee) Deenihan; grandchildren Anea (David Botton) Kamahele and Haili Kamahele, Ian and Luke Deenihan, Christa Piccinotti and Adam Thomison, Allison and Erin Lee, and great-granddaughter Carena. Charles is predeceased by his father Charles Patrick Deenihan, mother Marie (Andersen) Larsen, stepfather Henry Larsen, and brother Henry Larsen. Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Tuesday, July 26, 2005, at 11 a.m. at Duggan's Mission Chapel, 525 W. Napa Street, Sonoma, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations made in memory of Charles to the Hanna Boys Center, P.O. Box 100, Sonoma, CA 95476, or charitable foundation of choice, are deeply appreciated by his family.

Joseph L. Owades didn't invent the famous Miller Lite catchphrase, but he made it possible - while revolutionizing the beer industry worldwide. Owades, who died Friday, Dec. 16, at his home in Sonoma at the age of 86, developed a process in the 1960s for removing the starch from beer - an innovation that established the light beer industry, and secured Owades a prominent place in brewing history. Owades was working for Rheingold Breweries in Brooklyn, N.Y., when he developed a way to reduce the carbohydrates and calories in beer. When his own beer product, Gablinger's Diet Beer, failed to interest consumers - its marketing campaign ads featured a sumo wrestler devouring spaghetti while guzzling a Gablinger's - he shared his formula with associates at Meister Brau brewery in Chicago. When Miller Brewing bought out Meister Brau in the 1970s it acquired the light beer process and embarked on its famous "tastes great, less filling" ad campaign featuring well known athletes - and the rest was history. Or, history-lite, as the case may be.

I have heard there is a biography published somewhere of Eugene J. Healey (b. 1872, d.1973). Does anyone have any more information on this publication? I believe he is one of five children of Edward J. Healey, a shoemaker, and Mary A. Healey. If anyone can tell me anything more about this family, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.
