Sam was born Jan. 31, 1919, in Crockett, Contra Costa County, Calif., where they lived until they moved to Vacaville, Solano County, Calif., where he resided for many years. Sam worked with his family in the orchards surrounding the county, and in other endeavors until 1941 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II. He also fondly remembered having a "cup of coffee" with the New York Yankees when he was a catcher in the Pacific Coast Baseball League, where he played for many years with his brothers. Sam also worked at the old "Basic Vegetable" plant on Davis Street (now the site of the Brendan Theaters and the Vacaville ice rink) before going to work as a correctional officer at California Medical Facility State Prison. After his retirement from CMF, he worked as a train engineer for the Nut Tree Railroad for several years. Sam was also known to many of the longtime Vacaville sports fans as "Mr. Baseball." He was a scout for several years for the Cincinnati Reds, as well as being an umpire for semi-pro baseball games in Northern and Central California, as well as umpiring for local Little League Baseball and city league softball games. Sam was a longtime Vacaville resident before moving to Southern California to be closer to his daughters. Saw was predeceased by his parents and his siblings, Louis, Joseph, Tony, "Mack," Jim, Ann, Frank and "Nick."
