Sam was born Jan. 31, 1919, in Crockett, Contra Costa County, Calif., where they lived until they moved to Vacaville, Solano County, Calif., where he resided for many years. Sam worked with his family in the orchards surrounding the county, and in other endeavors until 1941 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War II. Sam served in the European Theater of the war, and often told the story of how, after marching for a couple of days and nights, he was "verbally reprimanded" by Gen. He also fondly remembered having a "cup of coffee" with the New York Yankees when he was a catcher in the Pacific Coast Baseball League, where he played for many years with his brothers. Sam also worked at the old "Basic Vegetable" plant on Davis Street (now the site of the Brendan Theaters and the Vacaville ice rink) before going to work as a correctional officer at California Medical Facility State Prison. After his retirement from CMF, he worked as a train engineer for the Nut Tree Railroad for several years. Sam was also known to many of the longtime Vacaville sports fans as "Mr. Baseball." He was a scout for several years for the Cincinnati Reds, as well as being an umpire for semi-pro baseball games in Northern and Central California, as well as umpiring for local Little League Baseball and city league softball games. Sam was a longtime Vacaville resident before moving to Southern California to be closer to his daughters. Saw was predeceased by his parents and his siblings, Louis, Joseph, Tony, "Mack," Jim, Ann, Frank and "Nick." He is survived by his wife, Mary Anne; stepsons, George (Sharon) Gorohoff and Charles Gorohoff ; sons, Jim (Donna) Zupo and Robert (Valerie) Zupo; and his daughters, Anne Marie (David) Duck and Rosalie (Patrick) Make; fifteen grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Author: RBestrom7380 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.california.counties.solano/1247.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Solano County Recorder identifies several recorded documents in the name of Harvey G. Chandler. One being as involved in the Nettie B Ward estate in July 2003. It appears her property was sold on 7/23/2003, Grantor names, Harvey G Chandler, Bobby J Monard, and Bobby J, Gary W, Diane, and Simon D. Chandler. In 1998, Nettie provided an affidavit of death of Melvin F. Ward. I found your posted family tree. It shows your grandfather Harvey Chandler 16 Sept 1926 in North Carolina, to 1 January 1965 in Solano Co, CA. You show his father, grandfather and great grandfather Solomon. So, you have a great deal of information about your grandfather. I would suggest asking your father and his siblings about the person. You appear to already have the basic facts.
