    1. Casner/Carsner Researchers/Descendants
    2. Elizabeth Freeman
    3. Hello List: I'm trying to stir up interest among any Casner researchers/descendants. By my count, there are at least four-maybe five- people lurking out in cyber space and quitely viewing this list. Generally, I post information to the list but am taking a different approach trying to open the lines of communication. As one person put it, my Casner line is 'the hell raising bunch' that terrorized the TX panhandle in the late 1870s. Would you believe they didn't go to jail for killing nine people in revenge for the murder of their two brothers in 1876. The two moved to another part of TX and became respectable citizens. But low and behold, in 1899 they were involved in a shooting on the range over the placement of a fence. One person died as a result of the shooting. They were both tried and convicted for their part in the killing. However, they appealed. The appeal was remanded back to the courts where they were tried (in effect they won their appeals). To my kowledge they were never tried again. But alas! They had to sell all their range land and livestock to pay the attornies who defended them. At that point they just rode off into the sunset - never to be heard of again (at least not yet). I spend my summers trying to determine what became of them. Perhaps there are Casner descendants out there who just don't want to claim relatoinship to my bunch. However, it is all part of history and heritage. Trust me, living descendants of this line are really a great bunch of people. Liz Freeman In OK! PS: Of the family of 12 brothers and one sister (to the two mentioned above), there are some other 'very interesting' characters also.

    3. I recently came across information where a Sarah M. Casner (b.2-15-1851) in Richland Township, Washington Co., AR married Orrin Lemuel Chapman on 11-14-1869 in Greenwood, KS. Sarah died 3-25-1886 in Bethany, Harrison Co., MO. They had three children (Rubin, Minnie, Thomas). I am inclined to think that the above Sara M. Casner is one fo the daughters of William John S. Casner (b1817) and Elizabeth Sherrod (b4-26-1819) as they are on the census in Washington Co., AR in 1850. Elizabeth and her children are shown on the 1860 Washington Co., AR census. William dies in 11-1860. Does anyone have confirmation that these two Sara Casner people are one and the same. Would like to hear from you.

    1. Casner/Carsner in Calavares County, CA
    2. Elizabeth Freeman
    3. I just recently obtained photos of a monument in Calavares Co., CA concerning William and Daniel Carsner who 'struck it rich' in the Sandy Gulch area of Calavares County, CA circa 1849. They are later murdered in 1877 in Palo Duro Canyon, TX. They were two of 13 brothers, all of whom mined in various areas of CA and all of whom 'struck it rich'. However, I have been unsuccessful in locating some of the brothers. The brothers were: (1) John L. Casner (b.1822 d circa1901 TX/NM) - still searching for exact date/place of death (2) Frank Casner (b1823 d1897 Kern Co., CA) (3) Benjamin Casner (b1824) - still searching for death date/place (4) William 'Bill' Carsner/Casner (b1825 d1877 TX) (5) Ebenezer/Eben Casner (b1827) - still searching for death date/place (6) Jonas 'James' Carsner (b9-24-1827 d12-12-1864 OR) (7) David Casner/Caskey/Casnee (b1832) - still searching for death date/place, thought to have died in CA (8) Andrew Jackson Carsner (b10-10-1836 d.3-1890 OR) (9) Daniel 'Dan' Carsner/Casner (b1837 d1877 TX) (10) Moses H. Casner (b1837 d10-19-1912 AZ) (11) James 'Jim' A. Carsner/Casner (b12-1839) - probably died after 1890 in OR, WA, CA (12) Henry Casner (b1840) - still searching for death date/place, possibly in OR, WA, CA (13) Riley Casner (b7-9-1843 d11-27-1909 AZ) I suspect some of the brothers left families somewhere in CA. Would like to communicate with anyone who might have connections or information on any of the above.

    1. Casner Murders in West TX - 1877
    2. Elizabeth Freeman
    3. Okay listers, I won't keep the information on the two Casner brothers who were murdered in West TX a secret. William 'Bill' Casner and Daniel 'Dan' Casner are the who were murdered 1-20-1877 in Palo Duro Canyon, TX. They are two of the fourteen children of Henry Casner and Jincy Jane Fields Casner. The children were: (1) John Casner (b1822 MO) - from the West TX stories along with his son John Lewis Casner (b1851) (2) Frank Casner (b1823) (3) Benjamin Casner (b1824) (4) William 'Bill' Casner (b1825 IA dd1-20-1877 Palo Duro Canyon, TX) (5) Ebenezer Casner (b1827) (6) Jonas 'James' Carsner (b9-24-1827 MO) (7) David Casner/Caskey (b1832 MO) (8) Andrew Jackson 'A.J.' Carsner (b10-10-1836 IA) (9) Moses/Moses H. Casner (b1837 MO) (10) Daniel 'Dan' Casner (b1837 MO d1-20-1877 Palo Duro Canyon, TX) (11) Nancy Jane 'Jo' Casner/Carsner (b1-25-1839 Ray Co., MO) (12) James 'Jim' A. Carsner/Casner (b12-1839 MO) (13) Henry Casner (b1840 MO) (14) Riley Casner (b7-9-1843 IA) Most of the family migrated to OR in 1852 and spread from there. Several of the sons struck it rich in the gold/quartz mines in CA. There was a split (fight) among some of the sons circa 1870 in OR. Those that remained in the Pacific Northwest changed the spelling of hte name to Carsner; others retained the spelling Casner. Henry Casner (father to all those children) is a son of Jonas Casner/Kestner who died between 1821-1830 in MO. It is believed that Jonas is a cousin to Isaac Casner (d10-16-1848 TX). We (descendants of Jonas) are still working on verification of this. I would be glad to field questions (if I have the answers - if not I will say so). I would also be glad to communicate with any Casner/Carsner researchers of my line (Henry & Jincy).
