    1. [CASNER] Information on Death of Jonas Casner, son Henry and "several others" in Jasper Co., Iowa
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: bozlen3 Surnames: Castner Classification: death Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.casner/127/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have noted numerous questions about the deaths of some of the members of this notorious family.Have tried to contact Liz Freeman but neither of her email addresses I've found are good. At any rate, this information is from the book about Jasper County, Iowa published in 1912, when so many county histories were being published: FROM: CHAPTER V EARLY SETTLEMENT OF THE COUNTY Past and Present of Jasper County Iowa B.F. Bowden & Company, Indianapolis, IN, 1912 http://iagenweb.org/jasper/history/1912/history/chapter5.htm "THE FIRST BAD CHARACTERS IN THIS COUNTY The two Castner boys, the fifth persons to come in for the supposed purpose of taking up lands, proved anything but good citizens. While Adam Tool, the first settler, was down in Jefferson County with his family, after having made his improvements, preparatory to bringing the family here, Benjamin and Jonas Castner came in from Missouri. Finding Mr. Tool's cabin unoccupied, they at once moved into it. When the good pioneer returned, rather than have trouble, he gave the boys fifteen dollars to vacate. They then claimed lands near by and built themselves a cabin. It was not long before it was noticed that Jonas was making frequent visits to his old home in Missouri to see his father, and it was also observed that whenever he went south that some of the friendly Indians lost several ponies, as they would come along and inquiry was made by them for stray ponies. These Castners committed all kinds of depredations, at one time robbing a poor Indian's tent during the absence of the squaw, of all the blankets, buffalo robes, camp kettles, and in fact everything that was worth carrying. That night when the Indian returned and discovered his loss, he started for Castner with a gun and butcher knife. Arriving at Frost's the latter persuaded him to stay all night, fearing he might get killed if he went there in the night alone. The following morning he went to Castner's and found his goods, but while there parleying about them, one of the boys came running in, saying to the Indian, "There is a turkey out here; let me take your gun," which the Indian did; but the young man forgot to return and while the Indian was in search of the young man to get his gun the goods disappeared and he never saw them afterwards. During the trouble that followed the Indian got his hand shot and claimed that it was done by Jonas Castner. In the fall of 1845 Jona! s finally got his just deserts at the hands of a mob near old Fort Des Moines. It was government payday at the fort and when Jonas was discovered hanging around, a party painted like Indians, but probably all whites, seized Jonas and ran him to the woods and gave him an unmerciful flogging. There was no trial and no questions asked. They said his curses were frightful. That fall the family went to Missouri, but afterwards returned to Iowa, bringing a large amount of stock with them, which mostly died during the following winter. Typhoid fever soon broke out in the family; the old man, his eldest son, Henry, and several younger ones died. The balance of the family scattered, some going in 1862 across the plains. The Castners were Virginians by birth and several of their near relatives had served time in the penitentiary of that state." Author: lisadaly2375 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.casner/100.3.2.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My connection is with my great great grandmother Annie A Casner 1886-1907 who died at age 20, about 6 months after giving birth to her only son, and my line of the Adams, Harry Casner Adams. She passed away of Meningitis. Also, we feel that my great great grandfather, Harry R Adams, may have already been married when he married Annie A Casner in 1906. Whereas Annie would have already been pregnant in 1906 when she married Harry Adams. I would like to know more about the actual time (1905-1907) that it seems that Annie was with Harry and the life that they lived. Also, what would have happened to little Harry after his mother passed, as his father Harry did not list him in a book he was noted in for being a "who's who of engineers", he only listed his other wife and 3 children from that marriage. Was Annie A Casner the "other woman"? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: lisadaly2375 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.casner/124/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Just received the only record of a boy with the last name Adams in Westmoreland County Pennsylvania born on July 20, 1906, the same date as my great grandfather "Jack" C Adams. We were always told that he was named after his father...but that his father's name was Harry. So there has been the conundrum for quite some time. So this made sense when the information I received was for a Harry Casner Adams born on July 20, 1906. Born to a Harry r Adams and Annie Casner. I found a site on the internet that showed me a very blurry view of an obituary in 1907 for an Annie Casner Adams in pennsylvania, but I couldn't read most of it. We were always told that my great grandfather "Jack" ran away from home when he was 14 (1920ish). Now we think he probably changed his first name because he was probably running away from more then just his "home" So, this is what I need help with, if anyone knows: Harry R Adams and Annie (Casner)Adams, is their only child Harry Casner Adams? Does someone have the capability to send me a copy of Annie Casner Adams obituary from 1907? Or have this woman in their tree? Did Harry R ADams remarry after his wife Annie (Casner) Adams passed? If so, was her name or nickname Maude? When/where id Harry R Adams pass away? Does anyone have Harry R Adams in their family tree that matches the prior information listed here? How can I search to see if the Harry Casner Adams born July 20, 1906 in Westmoreland, Pennsylvania is the same man as the Jack C Adams that passed in 1971 in Aurora, Illinois being that his Obituary says he was born in Irwin, Pennsylvania (Westmoreland County)? He is also the father of Shirlee Mae (Adams) Fonda (Henry Jaynes Fonda's last wife) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: dgbarnard Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.casner/22.27.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi Teri I am descended from Frank Casner's sister, Mary Ivan Casner Shipp. Mary was the first daughter born to Lewis and Rebecca Clementine "Clemmie" Crabb Casner, born about 1890 probably in Texas. Lewis and Clemmie were the parents of 10 children. Lewis was the son of John Casner and Mary Freel Casner, who immigrated over the Oregon Trail in 1852. Mary died of either cholera or childbirth (possibly both) leaving John, Lewis and a newborn son, George. George was raised by his pateranl grandmother, but John kept Lewis with him and later moved from Washington Territory to California where he made a great deal of money in the gold strike. John and Lewis Casner bought a sheep herd with some of their money and moved them between the Panhandle of Texas and Arizona. They were also involved in several murders when their money was stolen. Lewis and Clemmie Casner were the first white couple married in the Panhandle of Texas on July 4, 1881 (I have a copy of their marriage license, w! ritten in longhand by the drugstore clerk that married them) I have much more, but also know the person who can help you more than me.
