Derril Marion Hess Derril Marion Hess, 89, Alturas, died Oct. 2, 2003, of natural causes in Murray, Utah. At the time of his death, he had been staying with his daughter Diana Jones in West Jordan, Utah, for several months. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Alturas. Interment will be at the Alturas Cemetery. Mr. Hess was born Feb. 11, 1914, near Canby, Calif. He graduated with a teaching degree from Cal State University at Chico in 1935. While there, he was a member of the football, basketball and boxing teams. He married Minerva C. Scott on Oct. 8, 1935, in Minden, Nev. Unable to find a teaching job after graduating from the university, he moved back to Modoc County and worked for Loveness Logging and in construction during World War II. After the war, he worked as a mechanic for Cal Trans from 1946 until retiring in 1972. He and his wife then worked for the Forest Service on Blue Mountain Lookout for nine years. Mr. Hess loved to go fishing, camping and hunting and watching sporting events. He coached Little League and was a scout master in Canby in the late 1940s and mid-1950s. He also served as a board member for Arlington Elementary School. Survivors include his wife Minerva Hess of Alturas; sons and daughters-in-law Ernest and Marilyn Hess and Butch and Sandra Hess of Alturas; daughters and sons-in-law Diana and Paul Jones of West Jordan, Carla and Jay Cross of Discovery Bay, Calif., Janice and Chuck Bishop of Quincy, Calif., and Kathy and Leland Ward of Palo Cedro, Calif.; sister Oleita Wentzel of Alturas; brother and sister-in-law Richard and Lynn Hess of Estacada; 18 grandchildren; and 37 great-grandchildren.
