July 1865 in California, son of Ferdinand Grisez, b. Mar 1830 and Margaret Montre/Moutre, b. Jun 1839, is what I have found in the federal census records from 1870 to 1920. Louis was married first, as you noted, to Martha Conley; you gave the marriage date and place as 30 Dec 1886, Siskiyou Co., CA. By 1900 they are divorced. Louis is living in 1900 in Table Rock Twp., Siskiyou Co., CA and is farming. He is listed as 35 years old, divorced, b. CA, father b. France and mother b. Ohio which is consistent with his parents being Ferdinand and Margaret Grisez. See census film T623, #113, p. 65. In 1900, Martha (Conley) Grisez (spelled Griseza in the census) is found living with her father, Christopher Conley, and step-mother in Edgewood Twp., Siskiyou Co., CA, age 36, divorced, b. Apr 1864, born CA, father b. NY and mother born CA. She has given birth to one child and that child is living. The child appears with her and is a daughter, Irma A. Griseza [sic], 11 years old, b. Apr 1889 in CA. Irma's parents are listed as born in CA also. See census film T623, #113, p. 277. In the 1910 census, Louis Grisez is found at 612 (642?) North St., Yreka, Siskiyou Co., CA. He is 44 years old, married for the second time, married for 2 years, and occupied as an agent for sewing machines. His wife is Frances, age 24, is married for the first time. She has not had any children. See census film T624, #108, p. 256. In 1910, Louis's former wife, Martha A. Grisez (still spelled Griseza in census) is found at 1298? 12th? Ave., San Francisco, San Francisco Co., CA. She is 46 years old, divorced, b. CA, father b. MI, and mother b. unknown. She has had one child born to her and that one is living. With her is Irma A. Griseza [sic], daughter, age 20, b. CA, parents born CA. Irma's occupation is listed as student (?). An Albert Roberts is a lodger in their home. See census film T624, #100, p. 96. In the 1920 census, Louis is found at 642 North St., Yreka, Siskiyou Co., CA. He is listed as 54 years old, married, b. CA, father b. France, mother b. OH, and his occupation is still listed as an agent for sewing machines. His wife Frances is listed with him, age 34, b. CA, parents born England. No children are listed in the household. Evidently they had no children. See census T625, #149, p. 221. That is all I can tell you about Louis Grisez, son of Ferdinand and Margaret Grisez. The two men you found in the 1885 directory of Siskiyou Co., CA are as follows: Celetine Grisez was a man born 1841 in Ohio whose parents were born in France. It is not clear to me who his parents were at this point. In 1870 he is found in Alliance, Stark Co., OH, age 29, working in some type of mill. He is married to Mary _______, age 30, b. OH whose parents were born in France as indicated in later censuses. They have three children: Peter, 5; Mary, 3; and Ida, 1, all born in OH. By 1880 Celestine and his family had moved to Table Rock Twp., Siskiyou Co., CA. He and his wife have four additional children in 1880: William, 7; Jennie, 5; Johney [sic], 3; and Frankie, 1. The latter two children were born in CA. By 1920, Celestine is a widower living at 910 Lafayette St., Santa Clara, Santa Clara Co., CA. He is still working as an engineer of some type at a university. His daughter Ida is living with him, age 50 and single. She is a dressmaker. Margaret PACE, age 10, b. CA is listed in the household as an adopted daughter. James Grisez is actually Francois Xavier Grisez, Jr., born 1836 in Ohio, son of Francois Xavier Grisez, Sr. (c.1797-1878) and Catherine Calmalet, his second wife. James and his father used the given name James according to the census records. James is the younger, half-brother of Ferdinand Grisez noted above. James Grisez is out of his father's Ohio household in 1860 and in 1870 is found in Table Rock Twp., Siskiyou Co., CA. He is 33 years old, single (but he married later that year), and farming. By 1880, still in Table Rock Twp., James is married to Caroline Ricks, born Aug 1843 in MO. They have two children: Annie, age 8, b. CA, the subject of my original query to this message board, and Edward F., age 4, b. CA. Another child, Freddy, b. in 1885 died in infancy. James and his wife are still found in Table Rock Twp. in 1900 and 1910. James died in 1916, but his wife Caroline lived until 1921. In the 1920 census, Caroline is living with her daughter Anna on the farm in Table Rock Twp. Anna apparently remained on this farm until she died in 1961. She evidently never married.
