LA PORTE This town is situated in the southern border of the county, adjoining Sierra on the ridge which divides Yuba and Feather Rivers, and is forty-five miles distant from Oroville, with which place it is connected by stage. It has a population of about three hundred, which depends entirely upon mining for its existence and support. La Porte is the center of a large mining district lying in both counties, and has the reputation of being one of the best bullion producing districts of Northeastern California. It has a bank, fair hotel accommodations, general store, and all of the business facilities incident to mining towns of its class. It is a post and express office.
