    3. BIG VALLEY GAZETTE - November 23, 1893 A SHOCKING ACCIDENT Rev. J. S. Hutton Falls From A Wagon and is Crushed Under its Wheels. DEATH WAS INSTANTANEOUS. Fred Roberts Has a Miraculous Escape, But Receives Severe Bruises. A terrible accident occurred last Thursday afternoon at half past three o'clock, at the 4-mile post on Hatchet Creek Mountain by which J. S. Hutton lost his life and Fred Roberts was severly bruised. Mr. Roberts was on his way to Redding with the furniture and effects belonging to Mr. Hutton, who had been stationed at Sutter City at the last conference of the M. E. Church, South. Mr. Hutton was riding on the wagon with Mr. Roberts while Mrs. Hutton and the children rode in the buggy ahead of them. They had left Big Valley on Tuesday, Nov. 14th and everything went pleasantly until Thursday, at about 3:30 P.M. of that day they were going down on the other side of Hatchet Creek Mountain and when near the 4-mile post, the wheel on the left hand side struck a rock, which caused Mr. Roberts to lose his balance and fall from the seat to the ground; as he fell, his right leg was caught between the spokes of one of the wheels, and the wheel turned twice before he got his leg clear of it. As soon as Mr. Roberts started to fall Mr. Hutton reached over for him, when he, also, lost his balance and seemed to fall on his head in front of the wagon. The four wheels of both wagons passed over his body the last one tearing the scalp loose from his head. Death must have been instantaneous, for Robert Leventon, who was right behind them, immediately ran toward Mr. Hutton and when he reached him, he had already ceased to breathe. Help was summoned and the body was taken to Montgomery Creek that evening, while Robert Leventon and Frank Triplett brought Mr. Roberts to his home near Lookout, where at last accounts, he was on a fair road to recovery. BIG VALLEY GAZETTE - February 1, 1894 DEATH OF EMMA HEATON. Mrs. Emma Heaton died at the home of her sister in Ono Sunday, Jan. 21st, at 1 o'clock. This was a sudden and awful bereavement to the family that already had so much trouble. Pneumonia was the cause of the sudden death. Mrs. Heaton was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Powers who have both before her traversed the pathway from which no traveler returns. The deceased was twenty six years of age. She leaves a husband and four small children, two of them twins only two months old. She was interred in a beautiful casket with the inscription "Mother" across the top. Five times have the bereaved had to traverse this road, which no one travels but with aching hearts, within the last three years. The funeral services was delivered by Rev. W. S. Kidder. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to both bereaved families. - Ono correspondent to the Anderson Valley News- Wood The San Louis Obispo daily Tribune publishes quite a long article on the death of Augustus Wood. In 1885 Mr. Wood bought a home at Nipomo, where he has since lived. Several years ago he met with an accident from a runaway team, when injuries were inflicted that permanently disabled him and injured his health. The immediate cause of his death was paralysis. Mr. Wood leaves a widow and seven children, only two of whom are living in the vicinity, C. W. Wood, who is employed on the Pacific Coast railway and a daughter who resides with her mother.
