Also, Obit for Searles TOMPKINS - Yreka Journal, 29 Apr 1902 Death of a Pioneer Died at his residence three miles from Scott Bar, Siskiyou County, California, on April 21, 1902, Searles TOMPKINS aged eighty years and eight months. "Squire THOMPKINS" as he was known to all his friends and aquaintances, was born in August, 1821, in Schoharie County, New York. In 1838 he removed with his parents to Van Buren County, Iowa. In 1853 he came to California by the overland route arriving at Feather river in the summer of that year. In the spring of 1854 he came to Siskiyou county, first living on French Gulf, a tributary of Indian creek, were he followed mining until 1857 when he removed to Scott Bar, and continued mining until too old to work at that business. For the last twenty five years he has lived on his little ranch three miles from Scott Bar. He served as Justice of the Peace for many years and was a Republican nominee for County Judge against the late Judge E. SHEARER, when the county was strongly Democratic and received a highly complimentary vote. Judge TOMPKINS had treasured up a store of knowledge that was wonderful, one of the most observant of mankind, nothing escaped his observation. He was well versed in law and was an upright and impartial Judge. It was the good fortune of the writer to have been intimately acquainted with him for over forty years, and he feels justified in saying that he never knew a more manly character. Honest in every sense of the word, amiable, full of charity for the whole world and every creature on its surface, generous and just, no person who knew him could be his enemy. Of revolutionary stock his love of country and patriotism were without limit. He was a second cousin of Daniel D. TOMPKINS, Vice President of the United States during President MONROE's administration. Old Friend rest in peace!
