SURPRISE VALLEY RECORD CEDARVILLE, MODOC COUNTY, CAL. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 4, 1922 Alex Weilmunster and Mrs. Daisy Weilmunster were married at Reno one day last week and returned to their ranch in Long Valley. (Note: They were married in 1912. ??? BCR) H. B. Stephens of Fort Bidwell went to San Francisco last week to be at the bedside of his son, Harry, who is reported seriously ill. We hope to hear of his recovery very soon. McCulley & Rea have dissolved partnership in the McCulley & Rea hardware business, which they have conducted here for the past ten years. See their advertisement. NOTICE As I am going out of business in about a month, all accounts must be settled by that time by cash or bankable noted. A. D. Hudspeth Eagleville, Cal., Jan. 3, 1922 McCulley & Rea are preparing to dissolve partnership. Mr. McCulley get the ranch property and intends to make a real dairy ranch out of the property, while Mr. Rea takes the store and intends to prove that the war is over by cutting the price of goods to where they belong. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 11, 1922 A. Bieber, one of the pioneer merchants of Lakeview, and brother of N. Bieber, the founder of Bieber, Lassen County, died in San Francisco on December 29th. Thus, one by one the old-timers of the north are passing over to the Great Beyond. None of the younger generation will ever know, or appreciate the trials and vicissitudes passed thru by those old pioneers who paved the way for civilization and settlements of this northern country. And the worst of it is that they will all soon be forgotten, except by a very few. But very few, if any, of the parties now living in Sunrise remember the time when Cedarville went by the name of Deep Creek; but such is a fact. One day last week Grant Adams showed us a business card of the firm of Cressler & Bonner, which he has had since 1873. On the card is the firm name of Cressler & Bonner, Dealers in General Merchandise, Tobaccos, Clothing, etc., with the address given as Deep Creek, Cal. Of Course the name was later changed to Cedarville. Cressler & Bonner engaged in the mercantile business here in 1868, and many changes has been made since that time, but never before last week, did we know that this place was ever called Deep Creek. Earl Boston returned last week from a trip to below, where he went to take Pete Larragorry to San Quentin. He reports having a good trip and said that it is quite cool down there and that they had much rain there. Frank McArthur, one of the most energetic business men ever in Modoc, came up from his home at San Francisco to be present at the railroad meeting last week. If all our citizens took the same interest in Modoc affairs as does Mr. McArthur, the country affairs would be greatly improved. Thomas Wentzell left yesterday for Oroville and from there to Sacramento and other places. While below he will undergo treatment for stomach trouble, and on his return will bring back a drilling machine, which will be used for drilling for water on Captain Johnstones holdings at Massacre Lake. Loyd Coates returned to Reno last week, where he is attending the State University. John Stewart, Jr., left yesterday for Oakland and will remain there for a time. Postmistress Street and Thos Wylie were visitors at the county seat last Sunday. Frank Smith of Bidwell left last week for Oakland where he will spend the winter. We all wish him a pleasant visit and safe return. Miss Elsie Kober and Miss Marie Baty, of Bidwell left here last Sunday for Oakland, where they will attend Business College this winter. George H. Morgan was down from near Lake City, last Monday. He has not been in good health for sometime and was down to consult Dr. Kennedy. Robert Hansen departed Monday for Watsonville and other places south and will be absent for a few weeks. Dame Rumor says hes not coming back alone. Mr. and Mrs. Ernie fee, of Bidwell was down last week, bringing their son, Lawrence, who went to Reno to enter the State University, of which he is a student. Miss Mildred Street, who spent her vacation with her mother and family, left last Sunday for Oakland, where she will resume her studies at Healds Business College. We understand that Fred Murphy has sold his interest in the Murphy Bros., Stock Company to Walter Johnstone, of this place. The property is situated in the southern part of the valley and is one of the best in it. Last week the partnership of Hanks & Hoopes, in the livery business, was dissolved. Mr. Hanks retiring and Mr. Hoopes, is continuing the business. Mr. Hoopes is an all right liveryman and stock left in his care will be well attended to. Guy Gooch took a four horse team and wagon with a hay rack on it, and hay in the rack, and then gathered up all the youngsters he could find and took them over to the Hapgood reservoir last Sunday, where the young folks enjoyed themselves in a day of good skating, and all report and excellent time. The officers of the Surprise Valley Bank were elected last Saturday as follows: F. E. Bush, President; J. R. Wilson, Vice President; James Heryford, Treasurer; and K. M. Street, Secretary and Cashier. The conservative manner of handling business has won for it many friends and it is forging ahead on a solid basis. Sumisky, the cattle buyer was here during the past week, as was also a man named Carter. The former purchased the cattle of Charles Cummins, Heb Miller, Luman Foskett and E. J. Beebe, and the latter purchased some from Mode Page, and several other small lots. We understand that the price paid was five and three-quarters cents delivered at Alturas. M. Dietz, who recently disposed of his interest in the Sanitary Plumbing Company to Jack Argraves, has accepted a contract to install a stamp mill at Fandango holdings of the Goose Lake gold Mining Company, in which a number of local people are interested. The company has purchased a stamp mill from one the companies, which at one time operated at High Grade. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 18, 1922 Dan Hanks is reported ill with threatened pneumonia. Born In Cedarville, cal., Jan. 11, 1922, to the wife of Dr. Durkee, a son Born In Cedarville, Cal., Jan. 16, 1922, to Rev. and Mrs. E. E. Beach, a daughter Born At Eagleville, Cal., Jan. 9th, 1922, to the wife of Earnest Murphy, a daughter. J. F. Klinkenbard and bride arrived here from Portland last week and expects to reside here in the future. Miss Muriel Wilson and brother, Joe, were reported on the sick list this past week but are now convalescing. Mrs. C. T. Sharp was reported quite ill last week with pneumonia, but is reported as improving at this writing. Mrs. Maude Keeney left Monday for Adin where she will visit there for a while and go below for medical treatment. I. S. Brown, of this place, received the sad news last week of the death of his brother, which occurred at Piketown, Ohio, on January 3rd. Roy Baker, of the Fort Bidwell Bank, passed through the north end of town last Sunday. Where he was going, the Lord only knows for we dont, but as he was going at the speed of double geared lightening, its a cinch that he got to someplace mighty quick. The second trial for George Sweeney will be held at Alturas on the 23rd of January. The following jurors from this valley have been summoned: Mrs. Mae Page, Homer Beeson, George W. Warrens, Rufus Stout, C. F. Wheeler, Mrs. Annie Cline, Chris Hansen, W. A. Odbert, Jr., Miss Celia Daniels, J. A. Dyke, Frank Bucher. The Dalles, Oregon, Dec. 29, 1921 The announcement of the marriage of Charles F. Catlin, formerly of Cedarville, Cal. High school student and graduate, to Miss Ruth Shoun, of Fossil, Wheeler County, Oregon. Mr. Catlin is well known in Surprise Valley and his wife is of a prominent family of Fossil. He is attending the State College at Corvallis and his wife is also there attending the College in a course of music. Mr. and Mrs. S. Cole, of Lake City, left last week for the lower country, where they will spend the balance of the winter. Mr. Cole has been in ill health for sometime and hopes the lower altitude will prove beneficial. Will S. Hayes, Postmaster General, has accepted a position as Director General of the Moving Picture combination, and will resign his present office. WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 25, 1922 DEATH OF MRS J. D. But that won't be necessary. I have no connections to the Skeen family or to the Grisez family for that matter. My interest in Anna Grisez (1871-1961) was that she was a friend of my maternal grandfather in the early 1900s, and I was hoping to locate living relatives of Anna who could possibly help me determine the movements of my grandfather from about 1900 to 1916 when he married my maternal grandmother. Hence, I looked into Anna's family for that purpose. Thanks again. Good luck with your research. Regards, Pat Burke

Hello, In follow up to the below posting, I have sent the following letter to the editors of the Pasadena Star News and the San Gabriel Valley Tribune newspapers. I have also notified the State Cemetery and Funeral Bureau in Sacramento. Sue Silver, State Coordinator California Saving Graves ************************************* Begin letter text: Re: Savannah Memorial Park Editor: The El Monte Cemetery Association has quite a dilemma on its hands if it cannot afford to continue to hold, operate or maintain the Savannah Memorial Park in Rosemead. This cemetery is also known as the El Monte Cemetery or at least that is the name the State recorded when it conducted surveys of California cemeteries between 1950 and 1985. It is by all means one of California's historic cemeteries and represents the early exploration and settlement in California, probably before and after the Mexican War. The State's register for this cemetery cites that it was established in 1852, just two years after California attained statehood. I do not know when the El Monte Cemetery Association acquired the cemetery, but they were not incorporated until 1920. California's statutes governing cemeteries provided for the incorporation of Rural Cemetery Associations in 1859 (Repealed 1931). It does appear that the cemetery was in use by the public for some 60+ years before the El Monte Cemetery Association became a legal California cemetery corporation and was duly authorized to own, operate and maintain a cemetery in the state. From these few facts and presumptions, it would be our opinion that the title to the El Monte Cemetery, as it was used by the public previous to the formation of the El Monte Cemetery Association, vested in the PUBLIC through operation of California law (former Political Code section 3105, now substantially embodied as Health and Safety Code section 8126). The public acquired legal title to the cemetery as a result of its continuous and uninterrupted use of the cemetery for five or more years after January 1, 1873. The public's title was and is superior to that of the El Monte Cemetery Association as the law prohibits adverse possession of lands in public title. Even if the above were not accepted as factual, cemetery associations formed under the former Rural Cemetery Association Act are subject to regulation by the Dept. of Consumer Affairs Cemetery and Funeral Bureau. This means that the El Monte Cemetery Association must abide by the laws and regulations of the Health and Safety Code pertaining to Private Cemeteries. The El Monte Cemetery Association cannot by law sell this cemetery to any entity that has not been issued a Certificate of Authority by the Cemetery and Funeral Bureau to operate the cemetery. It cannot sell the land as other than cemetery land unless it removes all human remains from its acreage and petitions the Superior Court of California to remove the land's dedication to cemetery purposes. The situation faced by the El Monte Cemetery Association is not unique in California. Many small cemetery associations have functioned for many years without establishing endowed care funds to provide for the cemeteries when they can no longer generate revenues. As is being contemplated by this Association, those cemeteries are basically abandoned, along with all the many original citizens of our state. California on the whole has a dismal record in its treatment of its cemeteries, both historic and modern. Remove a cemetery and you remove the evidence of all those people and the history their lives represented to the very community the cemetery represents. The history of the community is, in essence, often entirely removed. It is a shame that the Asian peoples who have moved into this community cannot be convinced to respect the cemeteries that existed there before they arrived. Their discomfort with the location of the cemeteries is NOT a criteria reviewed by the Superior Court of California when it approves applications to remove and relocate cemeteries. We believe the dead should be left to rest in peace. We believe the cemeteries of our state's early and historic communities should be left unmolested as their original founders intended. We would be willing to assist any interested persons who would like to help preserve this cemetery so that it may remain where it was established in 1852. Mary Skeen with her mother and father and three sisters had come from Arkansas. A brother Jake stayed in Arkansas. Her father Joseph died on"Top" Scotts Mountain, Trinity County, Enroute Oregon Trail. Elizabeth, the mother of this clan, settled in Siskyou CO CA with her family. Mary A. married Chris on September 29, 1859 Yreka, Siskiyou County, CA/Bk 1 Pg53 Reg. of Marriages, and moved to a rented house on the FT. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XW.2ADI/717.1.1.1.2.1 Message Board Post: Ms. Anderson: What I know of Louis Grisez, b. July 1865 in California, son of Ferdinand Grisez, b. Mar 1830 and Margaret Montre/Moutre, b. Jun 1839, is what I have found in the federal census records from 1870 to 1920. Louis was married first, as you noted, to Martha Conley; you gave the marriage date and place as 30 Dec 1886, Siskiyou Co., CA. By 1900 they are divorced. Louis is living in 1900 in Table Rock Twp., Siskiyou Co., CA and is farming. He is listed as 35 years old, divorced, b. CA, father b. France and mother b. Ohio which is consistent with his parents being Ferdinand and Margaret Grisez. See census film T623, #113, p. 65. In 1900, Martha (Conley) Grisez (spelled Griseza in the census) is found living with her father, Christopher Conley, and step-mother in Edgewood Twp., Siskiyou Co., CA, age 36, divorced, b. Apr 1864, born CA, father b. NY and mother born CA. She has given birth to one child and that child is living. The child appears with her and is a daughter, Irma A. Griseza [sic], 11 years old, b. Apr 1889 in CA. Irma's parents are listed as born in CA also. See census film T623, #113, p. 277. In the 1910 census, Louis Grisez is found at 612 (642?) North St., Yreka, Siskiyou Co., CA. He is 44 years old, married for the second time, married for 2 years, and occupied as an agent for sewing machines. His wife is Frances, age 24, is married for the first time. She has not had any children. See census film T624, #108, p. 256. In 1910, Louis's former wife, Martha A. Grisez (still spelled Griseza in census) is found at 1298? 12th? Ave., San Francisco, San Francisco Co., CA. She is 46 years old, divorced, b. CA, father b. MI, and mother b. unknown. She has had one child born to her and that one is living. With her is Irma A. Griseza [sic], daughter, age 20, b. CA, parents born CA. Irma's occupation is listed as student (?). An Albert Roberts is a lodger in their home. See census film T624, #100, p. 96. In the 1920 census, Louis is found at 642 North St., Yreka, Siskiyou Co., CA. He is listed as 54 years old, married, b. CA, father b. France, mother b. OH, and his occupation is still listed as an agent for sewing machines. His wife Frances is listed with him, age 34, b. CA, parents born England. No children are listed in the household. Evidently they had no children. See census T625, #149, p. 221. That is all I can tell you about Louis Grisez, son of Ferdinand and Margaret Grisez. The two men you found in the 1885 directory of Siskiyou Co., CA are as follows: Celetine Grisez was a man born 1841 in Ohio whose parents were born in France. It is not clear to me who his parents were at this point. In 1870 he is found in Alliance, Stark Co., OH, age 29, working in some type of mill. He is married to Mary _______, age 30, b. OH whose parents were born in France as indicated in later censuses. They have three children: Peter, 5; Mary, 3; and Ida, 1, all born in OH. By 1880 Celestine and his family had moved to Table Rock Twp., Siskiyou Co., CA. He and his wife have four additional children in 1880: William, 7; Jennie, 5; Johney [sic], 3; and Frankie, 1. The latter two children were born in CA. By 1920, Celestine is a widower living at 910 Lafayette St., Santa Clara, Santa Clara Co., CA. He is still working as an engineer of some type at a university. His daughter Ida is living with him, age 50 and single. She is a dressmaker. Margaret PACE, age 10, b. CA is listed in the household as an adopted daughter. James Grisez is actually Francois Xavier Grisez, Jr., born 1836 in Ohio, son of Francois Xavier Grisez, Sr. (c.1797-1878) and Catherine Calmalet, his second wife. James and his father used the given name James according to the census records. James is the younger, half-brother of Ferdinand Grisez noted above. James Grisez is out of his father's Ohio household in 1860 and in 1870 is found in Table Rock Twp., Siskiyou Co., CA. He is 33 years old, single (but he married later that year), and farming. By 1880, still in Table Rock Twp., James is married to Caroline Ricks, born Aug 1843 in MO. They have two children: Annie, age 8, b. CA, the subject of my original query to this message board, and Edward F., age 4, b. CA. Another child, Freddy, b. in 1885 died in infancy. James and his wife are still found in Table Rock Twp. in 1900 and 1910. James died in 1916, but his wife Caroline lived until 1921. In the 1920 census, Caroline is living with her daughter Anna on the farm in Table Rock Twp. Anna apparently remained on this farm until she died in 1961. She evidently never married. Hope you find this of some help. I'd be interested to hear what your connection to the Grisez family is. Thanks, Pat Burke

Recently I have been working with 1930 census info. I have noticed a lot, I mean a lot of errors. Most of them are in transcription errors. Just wanted to give you a heads-up when you are working with them. SURPRISE VALLEY RECORD CEDARVILLE, MODOC COUNTY, CAL. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1921 CHARGED WITH RAPE The people of Cedarville were shocked yesterday when the report was passed around that a vile crime had been committed in our midst. Pete Larragorry, an ex-soldier, was arrested, charged with assaulting a 17-year old High School girl last Monday. The prisoner was turned over to Sheriff Poore, who rushed him to Alturas as it was deemed unsafe to keep him here. As the examination will take place in a few days, we refrain from commenting on the horrible affair at this time, further than to state that if our young girls are subjected to debauchery by unprincipled and lecherous scoundrels it is high time that something should be done and the guilty one should be given the full extent of the law. DONALD REES DIES The many friends of Donald Rees will regret to hear of his sudden death, which occurred at Reno, owing to the result of an operation, December 3, 1921. The deceased was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Rees, once residents of this valley. He graduated from the Oil Center Grammar school at the age of 12 years, and was a graduate from the S. V. U. H. S. here. He had taken three years in Medical College at Berkeley but owing to ill health, he had suspended his medical education this term. He was a very promising young man just in the prime of life being 20 years, 5 months and 26 days. Sunday was a quiet day in Cedarville, as everybody was out duck hunting, and they met with greater or less success; generally less. Married At Alturas, Cal., November 30, 1921, Miss Ruth M. Baty and Bevis Ash, both of Bidwell. The record extends best wishes to this popular young couple. Frank Kerr and wife returned last Sunday from a visit to the lower country. While down, Mr. K. had a refractory tooth pulled and blood poisoning set in, which interfered somewhat with the pleasure of the trip. Twelve High School children were killed near Red Bluff last week, while being conveyed to the Red Bluff High School in an auto bus, driven by a sixteen year old boy, and two others badly hurt when in crossing the railroad track, a train crashed into the bus. Tonopah, Nev., Nov. 30, 1921 H. H. McCarthy, a pioneer resident of this section, had just completed a mining deal that was due to bring him long sought wealth. He was bitten by a spider last week at Prescott, Arizona and died from the effects the day before his dream could come true. Miss Ruth Wynona Fulton and Maurice P. Bucher were quietly married last Wednesday afternoon at the Baptist parsonage. The young folks will make their home on a ranch near Ft. Bidwell. They were accompanied to Alturas by Mr. C. G. Lowell and wife, who witnessed the ceremonial. Married At Alturas, Cal., Dec. 4, 1921, Mrs. Josie M. Shedd to Henry Harrington, both of this place. The bride and groom are well and favorably known here, the latter being proprietor of the Cedarville Shoe Shop. Their many friends extend congratulations and wish them a happy voyage over the sea of life. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 14, 1921 Born At Vallejo, Cal., Oct. 18, 1921, to Mr. and Mrs. Harry Lee, a daughter Late reports from Eldred Martin, who has been quite ill for sometime at Chico, are to the effect that he is improving. Mrs. Aven Gaustad returned last week from Ashland, Oregon, where she visited her sister, Mrs. D. Roys and family and reports a good trip. The case of Hutchinson vs Sweeney is being tried in the Superior Court this week, and several from this valley were called to Alturas to serve as jurors. P. Dollarhide is preparing to open a new harness shop in the Whitehead building, and will be ready to handle all work in that line about the middle of next week. Married At Alturas, Cal., Dec. 7th, 1921, Miss Rena Lusk to Roy Baty, of Bidwell. The Record extends best wishes for a happy and prosperous future as they journey thru life. Miss Berth House left here last Monday for Modesto, where she will join her brothers, John and Dan, who have purchased a farm near that place, and she expects to remain there for sometime. Her many friends here are sorry to have her leave, but wish her happiness and success. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 21, 1921 BIDWELL NOTES A new church building is being erected at the Fort Bidwell Indian School A new church building that was under construction and partially finished was blown down by a high wind that prevailed there on the night of the 14th. The roof of the new Lake City schoolhouse was blown off by the high wind one night last week. Fred Bucher and son, Carl are in San Francisco and will spend the holidays there. Mrs. Bucher has been there for sometime under medical treatment. NEEDS INVESTIGATION The Lakeview Examiner states that while cutting wood the other day, Mrs. Sanders cut her thumb very badly. Some men exercise might poor judgement in the selection of implements for their wives to work with, and we suggest that a course of training the masculine mind for the purpose should be adopted in our high schools. Anyway, if Mrs. Sanders had come here to Cedarville and learned how to chop wood, the accident would never have occurred. Eldred Martin, son of F. M. Martin of Fort Bidwell, who was reported in last weeks record to be improving, died at Chico last week, and his remains were brought to Bidwell and interred there yesterday. Chris H. Hansen and mother left last Thursday of Oil Dale, Kern County, where they go to visit Mr. and Mrs. B. E. Warren. Mrs. Hansen will remain with her daughter for sometime but Chris expects to return sometime this week. As we go to press, we learn that Mrs. Isaac Addington passed away near Eagleville today. The Hutchinson Sweeney trial ended yesterday and the jury stood for 8 acquittal and 4 for conviction. Ellis Adams entered the Letterman hospital at San Francisco some days ago and an operation was performed that demonstrated that no tuberculosis existed and the operation very successful and that he will be able to leave the hospital shortly. His many friends here will rejoice to hear this good news. Victor Rinehart had his collarbone broken caused by being thrown out when his car overturned while at Bidwell last Monday. WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 28, 1921 Last week Henry Addington met with a painful accident while riding after stock near the Royce place in Cedar Canyon. The horse he was riding slipped and fell with him; one of his legs was broken and badly crushed below the knee. Dr. Kennedy attended the injury and he is getting along as well as could be expected but it will be sometime before he is able to walk. Pete Larragorry was last week sentenced by Judge Jamison to serve an indeterminate term in San Quentin of from one to twenty-five years for attempted rape, and will be taken to that place this week. ________________________________ Please reply to: Billie Reynolds r3346@dcsi.net ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the Internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! Recently I posted an item on William Hezekiah SIFFORD. I was sent the item from a friend as I am researching the DECIOUS family. Since that time I have found out the author of the article is Ann Winder. To Ann, I apologize, I never take credit for an articles which I post, that I find interesting and others might also. Yes, I should have added "Author Unknown", but this old memory of mine at times slips into neutral.
