What a great response. I am reluctant to say that I have all of the information you are giving me. I am a grand daughter of William Sherman and Harriet Gardner. I was trying to flesh out the trip that Daniel Finety and Mary Gardner made with their father Daniel Gardner from Ohio to California by oxcart in about 1850-52. A brother Rhodes Gardner came after them, I believe. As they didn't show up in the census until 1860 for Santa Clara County, CA, I was trying to see if possibly Daniel had tried some mining as a relative suggested. Then the 1852 Sierra County, CA census was online with an "F" Gardner on a dmaged page and I hoped it was a "D" and "F" Gardner.
