On the 1860 Sierra census he is listed as John Mc Kee. His mother Anna (second husband Alexander Mc Kee) came to California from Ireland by way of Australia. We do not know if she married her second husband, Alexander, in California or Australia. John had one sister Catharine, also born in Austalia in 1849, and eight half-siblings. My mother said her grandmother said that her half-brother John was in the Civil War and came back shell-shocked, didn't think he ever married. Family moved to San Francisco from the Sierra town of Poker Flat in 1868 but looks like John returned to the Sierras after the War. My mother said that his sister Kate (Catharine) eloped from a bedroom window, not sure if it happened in Poker Flat or San Francisco. Haven't been able to find out what happened to her.
