He was mining gold. It sure makes sense given his eventual and long term profession. Its an area that had a lot of mining going on since the early 1860's. I see he was also counted in the 1900 census in Tulare Ca with Cora but he may have been in Rock Creek part-time working with mining partners. What do you think?
