My mother (Linda Morgan) was the original poster on this thread. Our family records have come from John Holmes Harris (who later married Victoria Moynier), one of their sons. We know that Abe and Catherine Eliza were divorced in Nov. 1883; we have copies of the court orders, which list these children at that time (and their names/ages match with those in the family Bible): Como Leon Lincoln (21 years) Lena (19 years) Inez (17 years) Lilly (15 years---usually written as Lillie in other documents Eliza (14 years) Rosa (10 years)---usually called Rose in other documents John Holmes (8 years) Iola (6 years) and Abraham Perry Jr. (3 years) The family papers we have came to us through Victoria Harris (nee Moynier), wife of John Holmes; he died in 1923. Her family is the Moyniers (originally Moynier Du Bourg when they came from France) and Fourniers, both long time farmers in French Corral. Another branch of the family is the Brownings, of Nevada City. My great-uncle Ralphard Harris (son of John Holmes and Victoria) wrote to the Forestry Service back in the 1970s, in trying to stop clear-cutting of the areas around the old family territories ( Banner Mines, Harris Meadows), that Abraham Perry was an Indian scout for wagon trains coming over the Sierras, and Catherine Eliza was a young (14 years) girl in one of the trains he led. They married in 1860 and founded Middle Water House and Our House as wagon/stage/mail stops, with lodging and supplies. My mother and I would like to find out more about what happened to Catherine Eliza Howe Harris after her 1883 divorce. The only information I have is a 1901 letter from her to her son John Holmes, wishing him well in his new marriage. She was living in San Jose. Abraham Perry died sometime between 1903 and 1906; John Holmes seems to have become the manager of Our House at that time, but the siblings (especially Abraham Perry Jr.) then tried to sell it, and we don't have papers for it after that time. John Holmes continued to work the mining claims. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
