The post is SO old that I fear the related email address for you may no longer be valid. But my wife's father is John L. Roper III, and her great great grandfather was in California briefly in the 1860 time frame before the war, and went there appreciably to get himself involved in some business. He came back to the east coast and served in the Civil War, and went on to found a great empire here in Norfolk, VA. I wonder if it could be the same John L. Roper. (This is John Lonsdale Roper.)
