He is listed with two others from Maine, Chester Houghton, 39, carpenter, and E.H. Taylor, 45, Joiner. (I assume all mill workers.) I found a James Smith, 25, M, born Me, Farm Laborer, Bear River Twp, Johnsons Ranch P.O., Yuba Co., Cal., Line 21. This could be them but with such a common name it may not be. Sierra County was created in April 1852 from portions of Yuba County and this area isn't far from Sierra County. Johnsons Ranch is over the mountain (near present day Wheatland, CA) and was regarded as the end of the trail for emigrant trains coming into California from the east. The Donner Party rescuers left from this site to climb the Sierra mountains in early 1847.
