I'm the grandson of Alton Jones, the half brother of George Arthur Henderson, son of G.W. Henderson. Have you tried the 1930 census? I would like to know if G.A. Henderson is there, living in Sierra county. I found a record that he died on June 1st, 1966,in Loyalton, Sierra county; but I'd like to learn if he had a wife and children. Arthur was a WWI veteran, serving with the 20th Engineers, Forestry. I've actually got 2 of his letters written to my grandmother (Gertrude "Keefe" Jones) and they will be included in a book I'm writing. Thanks again! Elizabeth A. is my great grandmother; her first husband was William E. Jones who died in 1888; Alton E. Jones is my grandfather. Mary A. On the 1860 Sierra census he is listed as John Mc Kee. His mother Anna (second husband Alexander Mc Kee) came to California from Ireland by way of Australia. We do not know if she married her second husband, Alexander, in California or Australia. John had one sister Catharine, also born in Austalia in 1849, and eight half-siblings. My mother said her grandmother said that her half-brother John was in the Civil War and came back shell-shocked, didn't think he ever married. Family moved to San Francisco from the Sierra town of Poker Flat in 1868 but looks like John returned to the Sierras after the War. My mother said that his sister Kate (Catharine) eloped from a bedroom window, not sure if it happened in Poker Flat or San Francisco. Haven't been able to find out what happened to her. He came back to the east coast and served in the Civil War, and went on to found a great empire here in Norfolk, VA. I wonder if it could be the same John L. Roper. (This is John Lonsdale Roper.) Author: CheronSD Surnames: Gibson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.california.counties.sierra/204.1.1.1.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The Mr. Gibson mentioned in the Rutishauser letters is my great uncle Joseph H. Gibson. Joseph Gibson owned and operated a saloon/hotel/dancing hall/livery first at Scales Diggings (Sears Township), then later around 1893 he opened a new saloon in Port Wine which he operated until the age of 77, when he retired to Ophir around 1910. Joseph Gibson was ever faithful to the Rutishausers because he worked in partnership with John Rutishauser, August Rutishauser's brother, and they ran the saloon in Scales Diggings, Sierra County, together for many years. They were friends as well as business partners. John Rutishauser was a brew master, making the most excellent lager beer which Joseph served in his saloon in Scales. There were several Gibsons, brothers of Joseph Gibson, in the area during the same time period and I would be interested in communicating with any Gibson descendant from the Yuba/Sierra/Butte counties from 1850 to the early 1900's.
