If so, how do I find this and is it indexed? The California State Census of 1852, Sierra County, page 106, line 45, has: John Ontes, age 23, miner, born Illinois, last residence Illinois, male citizen of the US. His is the last entry on that page, but unfortunately no indication of specific town or camp within the county is given. Was there more than one town at that time? He was originally from Jersey County IL and appears there on 1850 census. Not sure why I cannot find him in 1860 census, but would like to dig up more of his life as a miner, whether he worked a specific claim, etc. By 1863 he's in Ukiah, Mendocino County with a livery business and in 1864 he's in Cloverdale in Sonoma County. He married Jane, nee Weaver, Cathey, a Civil War widow and shipwreck survivor, supposedly on 22 Jul 1866, but we find no record of this in Sonoma County. Any ideas? He was Jewish, from Schrimm, Posen, and a distant relative of mine. I am trying to find out who his father was, and then I can connect him to my tree. I am in touch with a 4th cousin in Germany who is a direct Iglick descendant. It seems he had a brother Leopold, who also emigrated. I've been sending this email to several different mail lists in order to promote my free ancestry research website for beginners. This is not spam. It is only about free ancestry research. Over the years I have been on many Rootsweb mail lists. A person who I was exchanging emails with suggested I send it to a few of the lists in different states and see what happens. So that is what I am doing. It is possible you may see this email more then once if you are on many mail lists. I apologize if it seems annoying. In my frustration with the so-called free ancestry websites and free sites which are so cluttered you need a GPS to find your way out, I created my own. It's a simple collection of free ancestry resources and how to use them. My wife and friends encouraged me to put this website together. I kept getting questions from people who knew I was doing ancestry research and wanted to try it themselves. They were beginners and wanted to know where to go to get information about their ancestry.
