The Lavazolla family had a ranch if my directions are correct about 9 miles from town out past the old cemetary. There was Tony and I remember an older brother Pete (who I believe lived in town on the other side of the bridge past the old post office). The story I remember was that Pete saw a train once...when he went to Sacramento to have a tooth pulled. It seems like he was very old...but I was just a kid. We had to walk in to our place and Tony would loan us a mule when we had something heavy to carry in. We were on what was then called the Little North Fork, which I think may have been renamed. About 30 years ago there was a logging road which went in to the property that started near an old saw mill. I am looking for information on my great grandmother Sarah Marie Brown Kruse, who lived in Downieville and supposedly married John Ernest Kruse during the gold rush days. John Ernest died in Downieville on 21 Feb 1875 at about 44 years old. He was my great grandfathers brother, after he died my great grandfather John Henry Kruse married Sarah and raised their children in San Francisco along with three they had together. He later owned J H Kruse Lumber Company in San Francisco. John Ernest owned a saloon and part of the water works and some mining land according to some records. I would also like some help in obtaining more information an an obituary if possible. I could not spend enough time in Downieville to complete my search and am not in physical condition to do it now. I figure the saloon was where the old Quartz Cafe was. I may be able to come up with more on the Lavazzola's when I have time to think about it. My new email will be [email protected]

Most are not available online. Mining claims go by a number of names: placer claims, quartz claims, water rights/claims, proof of labor, etc. Sierra County was formed from Yuba County on April 16, 1852. Any records prior to that date should be with the Yuba County Recorder's Office in Marysville. (A brief history of Sierra County can be found on my CAGenWeb site at: <http://www.cagenweb.com/sierra>. I live about two hours from Downieville and go there two or three times a year (although I haven't been there in awhile). My g-g-grandfather arrived there in 1859. I will probably go later in the spring or this summer. If you send me what information you have (names, placed, dates) I will be happy to check the indexes for your family. I don't charge for this. Their mine was named the Tightener because as the vein traveled north it gradually pinched out. They had learned of this ledge from an early miner, James McCormick. My greatgrandfather apparently sold his share to McCormick at some point and the new partnership continued to mine. In 1903 the mine was leased or bonded to H. L. Johnson from John and Charles Binning, G. W. Hildebrand, and James McCormick. Johnson reversed directions from tunneling north to tunneling south. According to the Mountain Messanger in 1904 they extracted a 150 lb. piece of quartz that contained 47 lbs. of gold. For several years following they continued to discover other high grade ore deposits. Johnson sold the mine in 1911 t! o a group of Grass Valley miners who operated it until 1918. In 1919 it was purchased by the Alleghany Mining Co. and it continued to be profitable. In 1924 the Tightener was sold to the 16 to 1 mine and became an inegral part of that very profitable mine.

See the Sierra County GenWeb site at <www.cagenweb.com/sierra/> for a listing of vital records held, etc. (Keep in mind that Sierra county wasn't formed until April 1852. Prior to the time you have to check with Yuba county in Marysville.) The major Sierra county newspaper is the Mountain Messenger. It has been published from the 1850s. The California State Library in Sacramento has microfilms of most California newspapers. They can be shipped to your local library on inter-library loan. You'll need to check and make sure that the receiving library has a good microfilm reader as they can't be taken from the library. These newspapers are an excellent resource for family history research, but most of them aren't indexed. This requires a very time-consuming search, that can be lessened by searching around specific dates and events (e.g., birth, anniversaries, court trials, etc.). Just reading the newspaper can turn up good info but can take hours and hours. I have found articles about Sierra county and its early inhabitants in the Sacramento Bee and Sacramento Union . Sacramento isn't too far away to have info in them. And the Sacramento Bee has an index for the time period you are looking for. I did a Google search on "sierra battalion" and found this site. There are several others listed as well. <http://www.militarymuseum.org/Sierra%20Greys.html>. Chuck
I am trying to find newspaper articles or cemetery records of The Baruch Pride Family their Daughter Mabel "Annie" Pride marreid Richard J. Thomas son of John n Elizabeth Thomas of Sierra City. I have the piticulars when they were born and when they died what I'm looking for is Newspapers articles or maybe history books that may have Information on these families. There was a daughter of Baruch and Margaret Pride that was probably Margaret's daughter before she married Baruch. But other than information we found in the 1880 Census of this family was Lillie M Pride. I did also find that Margaret Pride may have been married to a Shoemaker in Virginia before she married Baruch in Washington County, Ohio. Baruch was the owner of the Pride Mine in Bassit Station. If anyone has run across any information on this family in your research I would appreciate any information. Thanks Larinda
