Surnames: Burnes Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.california.counties.sierra/333.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The California State Library, California History Section at 900 N Street in Sacramento has a great newspaper collection as well. It includes the Mountain Messenger. You really need a date or time period to search the newspaper. It will be a time-consuming search otherwise. These old newspapers often contain lots of good information. Don't neglect the two major Sacramento newspapers as well (the Bee and the Union). They would very likely carry an article on a murder committed in Sierra county. Chuck Knuthson Sierra County GenWeb

Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.california.counties.sierra/338.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I was in Downieville during summer of 2005. Wonderful little town. I saw two hotels, there may be one other. They are all small. On main street there is one just east of the Hwy 49 (Commerce St) bridge. Highway 49 enters town on the west side as "Main" street. But when the highway turns south and crosses the river, the highway becomes "Commerce" street. Main street continues east as it heads along side of the river. The hotel on Main street was larger and has a restarant / bar on the first floor. The hotel on the south side of the river bridge is less developed. It might not have been a hotel in 1885. I am not a historian of this area, but thought that this might help you sort out your answer.

It mentioned my Bavouzet relatives and some of the Ramm family. I have received some information from the state of California archives (obits, newspaper copy, etc) plus in summer of 2005 I went to Camptonville and Marysville and dig some research as well. If you are not familiar with the story from Erma, let me know and I will send it to you. It is 11 pages typed in Microsoft Word format...or I can put it in almost any other format you need. If you are familiar with the document, and are aware of other information, please send it on to me. I would love to know more about the "Star of the Sea" church in San Francisco where Mon. Charles Ramm officiated. I have been near it but didn't get to see it. I would like to visit the cemetery there as some cousins are buried in it. If you wish you can email me directly. If you click on my name in the message board, it will show you my email address. If you happen to know any of the surviving Ramm family members I would love to contact them. Thanks for writing, Rex

    3. Mike, In Erwin G. Gudde’s book, _California Place Names: The Origin and Etymology of Current Geographical Names_ (Berkeley/Los Angeles/London: University of California Press, 1940; Fourth edition by William Bright, 1998), was found the following reference: “Whiskey Diggings [Sierra]. On Little Slate Creek, near the Plumas County line. Shown as Whiskey on Trask's map, 1853. The camp is mentioned by John Clark in "The California Guide," September 3, 1852. The _Alta_, February 24, 1854 reprints an item from the Gibsonville _Trumpet_ which reports that a greenhorn picked up a nugget of twenty-seven ounces on his first day of mining. There was prosperous tunnel work in progress when Vischer (p. 240) visited the place in 1859. One of the diggings averaged 700 dollars weekly in the winter of 1861 and 1862 (_Mining Press_, March 16, 1861; July 16, 1862). The camp was also known as Whiskey and Newark (Bancroft Scraps, V, p. 1782). The place is still mentioned as a part of the Gibsonville district in 1918 (_Mining Bureau_, XVI, Sierra, p. 11)." [Gudde, p. 368-369.] The Sierra County Clerk-Recorder's office at the courthouse in Downieville (the county seat) has many vital records (birth, marriage, death) dating from the county's formation in 1852. These early records are not complete but are worth a look. They may provide some family information. (California did not begin statewide recording of vital records until July 1905.) I hope this helps.
