I'm sorry I haven't replied sooner but I go thru my sister-in-law's ancestry and she forgot to flip your letter to me! John left home when I was about 3 years old and I haven't seen him since. Since I started genealogy I have met another one of his son's, John, of course! Ha! He lives in Wisconsin and is a truck driver. That would be great if you had a picture of him or anything for that matter. I never really got to know him. He gave me a necklace when he left and I still have it. I just barely remember him. My father's name is John also as well as my brother. I have been trying to track him down since 1998 and that is when I found out he had passed away. Is there any way I could get a picture of his grave site? I know it is a lot to ask and I understand if you can't. I just want to know about him since it was so important for him to leave Missouri and go to California. From what I understand he was a bit different! Ha! If you would like to email me here is my personal ! email address: [email protected] Thank you so much for responding and again I am sorry I didn't respond earlier. Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.california.counties.sierra/340.5/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In Erwin G. Gudde's book, _California Gold Camps: A Geographical and Historical Dictionary of Camps, Towns, and Localities Where Gold Was Found and Mined; Wayside Stations and Trading Centers_ (Berkeley/Los Angeles/London: University of California Press, 1975), I found the following references: "Pine Grove [Sierra]. In the Slate Creek Basin, at the Yuba County line. Shown on Trask's map, 1853, and on later maps. Lecouvreur was here in the summer of 1852, apparently before gold deposits were discovered, and gives a poetic description of the place (pp. 231 f.). In September of the same year, John Clark calls it "a new place with 5 or 600 inhabitants" ("The California Guide"). According to Vischer (pp. 238, 240) and _Transactions_, 1858 (pp. 198 ff.), the mining was mainly tunnel work. The _Mining Press_, October 19, 1861, reports that 6 thousand dollars' worth was washed out from one tunnel in eight hours. A detailed account of the Comet, a cooperative mining undertaking, is given in Raymond, V (p. 81). In 1879 there was still some hydraulic mining, and Hayes Mine is listed in Mining Bureau reports until 1942." [Gudde, p. 267.] [There is also a Pine Grove in Amador, Placer and Yuba Counties.] "Whiskey Diggings [Sierra]. On Little Slate Creek, near the Plumas County line. Shown as Whiskey on Trask's map, 1853. The camp is mentioned by John Clark in "The California Guide," September 3, 1852. The _Alta_, February 24, 1854 reprints an item from the Gibsonville _Trumpet_ which reports that a greenhorn picked up a nugget of twenty-seven ounces on his first day of mining. There was prosperous tunnel work in progress when Vischer (p. 240) visited the place in 1859. One of the diggings averaged 700 dollars weekly in the winter of 1861 and 1862 (_Mining Press_, March 16, 1861; July 16, 1862). The camp was also known as Whiskey and Newark (Bancroft Scraps, V, p. 1782). The place is still mentioned as a part of the Gibsonville district in 1918 (_Mining Bureau_, XVI, Sierra, p. 11)." Any information about Pine Grove, or the family, would be appreciated. John Daly

Surnames: Porter/D Rosa Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.california.counties.sierra/608/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I was glad to find out for sure where Plum Valley was. My gr-grandmother Elizabeth/Lizzie Porter/D Rosa's bachelor brothers John and George were there on the 1920 census. John was in SF in 1910 then I can no record of any of these older men until an 1896 deed sale of John's dwelling in Plum Valley 1896 (Book 11, 199)or my gr-grandfather Manuel D Rosa until the voter registrations in 1890 on back through 1880 and on back to 1866 for gr-gr grandfather Stillman Porter in Sierra. I am at a loss to know where they were in this earlier gap. There were several other D Rosa children born in this time (including my Grandfather). The Porter women show up in San Francisco in 1900 but none of these men are to be found (and Eliz. is listed as a widow). Earlier they were in Forest in 1880 with their father Stillman and other family, also in 1870 in Goodyears Bar. Stillman was evidently shot in his store robbery in or near Pike in Sept 1885 and is buried there,I believe near an infant grandson (twin?)Joseph Da Rosa of 1884 (His parents md. there in 1882). I've viewed microfilm of the county vital records in the Salt Lake City LDS family history center south of my home but cannot find any further records. Would you know if their filming was complete? It shows no death record 1874-1878 then 1884, only 3 ending Aug 1 then jumps to 1879 and an affidafit of birth of Stillman's daughter Kate filed in 1943 by her brother John Porter is all I can find for birth. I did find the 1882 mariage record there of my grgrandparents and think the I. Rosa witness is a relative of Manual's (Father?) since I find an Ignacio Rosa on the same ship manifest where I think Manuel is rightly fitting in (at16) in Boston from the Azores in 1873. The voter regis. lead me to his Nevada City naturalization in 1874. A copy of deeds, "Book Y, 1/22/1883, pg 684, 685, 686 of the Porter's property mentions a "county Road on the west by M Rose fence" Would this be indicator of property of my Gr grandfather's? Would there be mining claims? Any other ideas or places to try? Were there any obituaries or criminal records of shootings? Any major events for men in my 1890 to 1900 gap?

    2. I don't remember what year the City Directory for Sierra Co. is for on Sierra Co., on USGenweb. You can also find the pages on Ancestry.com or in the History of Plumas...Etc. Counties which were published around that time. I don't remember a hotel on Main Street when I went to Downieville in 2002. There were two that I remember at that time, both on Commerical Street...one just before the bridge which I believe the person was talking about and from my understanding it was originally the newspaper office. My family lived at 1 Commercial Street at one time according to the census. Across the bridge on Commerical Street which becomes Highway 49 is another motel which has rooms. You can do a search on the internet for Downieville. I believe there is another history which I saw part of and got pictures and some pages while searching in Sierra City from a lady who worked at their library. Somewhere I have lost those pages in moving but it gave more names and businesses for! several years because I found the Livery Stable and some other things that my families were connected with. Hope this will give you some idea. There are several places on the Main Street that could have been hotels at one time or another.
