Author: jn2tv4 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.california.counties.sierra/615/mb.ashx Message Board Post: GENEALOGY NEWS ALERT Contact: [email protected] CALLING ALL COUSINS DESCENDED FROM FAMILIES OF ROCKFORD, NORTH CAROLINA The Rockford Preservation Society has announced the launch of its 2007 Remember Rockford capital campaign. A major thrust of the campaign is for the village to reconnect with the descendants of families for whom Rockford is an ancestral home. "The campaign offers these descendants a real opportunity to preserve for future generations of their families their heritage and their home," says Ms. Hannah Holyfield, President of the society. "We are going to work with genealogical groups and with ancestry sites on the Internet to reach out to descendants who may have only minimal knowledge about their ancestors' lives here but would like to know more. We plan to contact these descendants and ask them to help us restore the village and then, literally, to come back home." The culmination of the "Remember Rockford" campaign will be a Remember Rockford Families Reunion to be held in 2009. The reunion date will be set in the coming months. Anyone with family ties to Rockford is encouraged to go to rememberrockford.com and register to receive news updates of planned events for the coming months. I am almost positive that your Sharkey family is related to ours! I have been researching the Sharkey line in our family for over a decade, but searching for info on the west coast is very difficult when you live on the east coast, not to mention I have been out of commission for awhile and am finally trying to get back on track with my research. Here goes! I KNEW my Sharkey family was from NY and some eventually ended up out in Yuba County,California, but also figured a relation to the Sierra county Sharkeys, especially when I saw that census info of Mary with the Henderson's; But with no other info, I wasn't able to make a connection. At one point I thought maybe it was the Myles Sharkey family. (Actually I think they are probably somehow related too). Anyway, When I saw this post, 2 things jumped off the page! One was the Mary Sharkey in Sierra County California and the second was the name (Norilla); spelled Morrilla on the NY census with Sara (Snowden) Faxon: Daughter of Mary Sharky and I think it was William? Snowden. It has been a long and winding road but I am finally here! My Sharkey family settled in Brooklyn,NY so besides Sierra and Yuba county CA, this family also has ties to ALbany, NY, Canada and probably MA as well. Was hoping maybe you could help me connect the dots: Do you have any info on Elizabeth's Father / Mary's Husband? If I am correct about being related, he will be the son of Cormick Sharkey b.1800 Ireland! Do you have the Maiden name of Elizabeth's mother: Mary Sharkey? Haven't come across the name Morillo/Murillo.etc.. before or after that census info till now. Who can have that name- unless your families are somehow related? Can you tell me where it comes from? Someones maiden name? PS: Do you know of any connection to a Hugh Sharkey? Looking forward to hearing from you! He is listed with two others from Maine, Chester Houghton, 39, carpenter, and E.H. Taylor, 45, Joiner. (I assume all mill workers.) I found a James Smith, 25, M, born Me, Farm Laborer, Bear River Twp, Johnsons Ranch P.O., Yuba Co., Cal., Line 21. This could be them but with such a common name it may not be. Sierra County was created in April 1852 from portions of Yuba County and this area isn't far from Sierra County. Johnsons Ranch is over the mountain (near present day Wheatland, CA) and was regarded as the end of the trail for emigrant trains coming into California from the east. The Donner Party rescuers left from this site to climb the Sierra mountains in early 1847. 3. The Sierra City cemetery is located in down town Sierra City. It is located on aside of a hill and need very good walking shoes to walk around the graveyard. It is a very old cemetery. If have any problems finding it the town people our very helpful. I went there last year. It is about 15 miles north of Donnieville Calif. It is a very quaint little town on the side of a mountain. It is located in Sierra County. Some of the records have been transcribed on genweb.com go to the state of California and then to the county list.
