Author: rlhsd Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.california.counties.sierra/623.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Page 19 in the book "DOWNIEVILLE Gold Town on the Yuba" (volume 1 of the James J. Sinnott's History of Sierra County series of books) states that "T.M. Ramsdell" was elected county treasurer in the June 1852 election. He and the others elected were the first Sierra County office holders. His political party was Democrat. It is an out-of-print book. But you can find it in some libraries and for sale as used. I am slowly creating a complete surname index for that book and posting it a few pages at a time at the below URL. I am willing to do look-ups in the book. So you may want to check that page from time to time. I probably won't finish it until the end of this year. http://cagenweb.com/sierra/Ref_books/SinnottV1.html Hope that is helpful, Rick Hanson CAGenWeb County Coordinator for Sierra County (http://cagenweb.com/sierra/) [email protected] (checked daily) or [email protected] (checked weekly) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 1. [CASIERRA] T.M. Ramsdell 1852 & 1853 County Treasurer
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: JRussell_1970 Surnames: Ramsdell Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.california.counties.sierra/623/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am looking for a Thomas Manley (or Manly) Ramsdell who was born in Vermont in 1801. >From a memoir by his son, Thomas Manly Ramsdell, Jr. (b. 1821 Vermont), while living in Circleville, OH: "There came across my father who had been a Colonel in the patriotic army of Canada in 1838 and 1839, but who had escaped into middle of Ohio after a reward of 200 pounds had been made for him by the Canadian government." That is the last reference made to Thomas Manley Ramsdell, Sr. in the memoir. I found a T.M Ramsdell in Downieville California on the 1860 Census born in Vermont about 1801 and listed as a "Public Administrator". There is no on listed with him. I found that T.M. Ramsdell was elected County Treasurer in 1852 and remained Treasurer in 1853 (http://files.usgwarchives.net/ca/sierra/history/1882/illustra/officers151nms.txt). I also have found him in the Downieville cemetery with a death date of 09-20-1863 at 65 years (http://files.usgwarchives.net/ca/sierra/cemeteries/sier-m-r.txt). Does anyone in the area know anything about T.M. Ramsdell? It would even help if his full name was recorded somewhere in the County records. 3. http://www.consrv.ca.gov/OMR/abandoned_mine_lands/North%20Yuba.pdf   http://www.bassetts-station.com/   The first link is a report on Abandoned Mines and I didn't read all the way through but the name Pride came up in the preview.  The second is for Bassett's Station and it has a short history in one of it's links with a list of the owners to present of the same.  Another thing I remembered although I don't know if it is any easier to get records from the Court House in Downieville.  There was a book when we were there in 2002 listing mining claims.  My Isaac Davis had several claims .  I don't remember but they should have a record if the mine was sold at any point.  Also, if their estate was settled in Sierra Co., CA, there are records of estates for many people.  We were allowed to go through all the lists of records we were interested in and then for a fee, got the actual records.  Another place to check is the museum in Downieville which is on the Main Street.  The people there when we were there were very nice.  Check the Yuba Co. and Sierra Co. rootsweb and USGenweb sites on line.  I don't know if this will help you.  Pat Morano ________________________________ From: "[email protected]" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, March 15, 2009 3:01:54 AM Subject: CASIERRA Digest, Vol 4, Issue 7 Today's Topics:   1. 3. Hi Pat, My great uncle passed away in 1933. I tried Google without success. I even checked out Sierra Genweb site and also tried to see if the Masonic Lodge mentioned in the paper had a website where I could contact them. The Mountain Shade Lodge still exists and they do have a website but no way to contact anyone. Masonic Cemetery could be part of a larger cemetery. When I put my great uncle's info up on Find A Grave, I want to have the correct cemetery listed. I am not from California. For all I know, the cemetery is in Yuba but, why he would be buried there instead of Downieville, is beyond me. He had lived in Downieville for about 20 years. He and a friend operated the Comet Mine for a number of years. According to his long story on his death from the newspaper, he was taken to Sierra City where the doctor pronounced him dead. He was driving from Downieville to the Gold Lake district. He had a heart attack while driving on Gold Lake road about a quarter mile from the junction of Yuba Pass Highway. D. D. Dearwater was the undertaker in charge in Sierra City. He was taken there, pending instructions from relatives and prepared for burial. My great uncle was supposedly very well known in Downieville at this time. His death was on front page of the Mountain Messenger on August 19, 1933.
