    1. Re: [CASHASTA] Coram, CA
    2. Coram Copper mining boom town and smelter town. Established in 1906 beside Motion Creek by Balaklala Mine & Smelter Company. Incorporated in 1910 and disincorporated in 1918; at one time was the smallest city in the United States with only 30 residents. Began with the issuance of 10 saloon licenses granted by county supeivisors. The Coram Post Offlice was esblblished in 1906, discontinued in 1922, and named for Joseph Coram, part owner of Balaklala Mine & Smelter Company. Not a cent was collected for property taxes at Coram because the many saloon licenses paid all the bills and salaries needed for the town expenses. Was located 1/2 mile south of Shasta Dam and 2 1/2 miles north of Copley. Once home to approximately 1000 residents, 23 saloons (with gambling halls in the rear) 12 rooming houses, three hotels, two butcher shops, three grocery stores, a hospital, drug store, jewelry store, sporting goods store, post office, a local teltephone for the town and also a long-distance booth, a smelter, and no church. A 20x20 ft. redwood water tank stored water from Motion Creek above town. Balaklala's 16,500 ft. ore-carrying aerial tramway ended at its Coram smelter. By 1910 well over 1000 lived at Coram. In 1911 the smelter was closed by legal action and within two months the smelter was partially dismantaled causing the town to become nearly deserted. In 1918 the town was disincorporated and in 1924 a fire destroyed much of the town. The brick stack of the smelter dynomited in 1926. Corun become the stockyard for Shasta Dam materials in the late 1930s; the conveyor belt which transported sand and gravel for Shasta Dam cement ended at Coram. The remaining buildings were demolished when the dam completed and the smelter was dismantaled and hauled away. All that remains are exavations or holes in the ground showing where the houses, stores and saloons once stood. copied from The Dictionary of Early Shasta County History 2nd Edition by Dottie Smith Janie At 05:40 PM 05/21/2000 -0400, Frank La Rosa wrote: >I am looking for any and all information on Coram, CA. > >Regards, > Frank La Rosa -- flarosa@optonline.net > > Webmaster: ITALIAN GENEALOGICAL GROUP Web Site > >http://www.italiangen.org > >Researching Names ==> LA ROSA, BARBAGALLO, NARDINI, > MARTINBIANCO, DI LONGHI, > CHINCA, STAGNITTA > > Areas ==> LINGUAGLOSSA, CATANIA > VOLPAGO DEL MONTELLO,TREVISO, > LA SPEZIA > > > >
