You could be right about his ancestry. I know that John's mother came to Menard with him and died here. There is quite a bit written about McNamar/McNeil because he was engaged to Ann Rutledge and there is a lot of mystery about her connection with Lincoln. The book "The Shadows Rise" by John Evangelist Walsh gives quite a bit of information about John. He's a fascinating character in the Lincoln story. Good luck to you in your search.
